Zinc-Plated vs. Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel: What’s the Difference?

Zinc plating and hot-dip galvanizing both protect steel with zinc, but differ in process, typical coating thickness and coverage. Learn how to choose by part, exposure and specification.

Zinc-plated steel and hot-dip galvanized steel both use zinc to protect steel from corrosion, but they are made differently and do not necessarily provide the same coating thickness or coverage. For a meaningful comparison, “galvanized” here means batch hot-dip galvanized: the steel is immersed in molten zinc. Zinc plating usually refers to a thinner coating applied electrochemically. Which one suits a project depends on the part, its exposure and the specification—not on a universal claim that one is always better.

What’s the difference between zinc-plated and galvanized steel?

Factor Batch hot-dip galvanized Zinc-plated or electroplated
How the coating is applied Steel is immersed in molten zinc. A reaction between iron and zinc forms bonded zinc-iron alloy layers at the surface. American Galvanizers Association (AGA) Zinc is deposited by an electrochemical process. The AGA distinguishes electroplating and zinc plating from batch hot-dip galvanizing. AGA
Illustrative coating thickness 1.7–3.4 mils in the AGA fasteners-guide comparison. 0.2 mils for electroplating and up to 1 mil for zinc plating in the same comparison. These are comparison examples, not requirements for every product. AGA fasteners guide
Coverage at edges and threads The AGA comparison describes uniform coverage at corners, edges and threads. The AGA comparison notes that difficult-to-access areas may receive a thin coating or no coating. Actual coverage depends on the part and its specification. AGA fasteners guide
Relevant ASTM standard examples ASTM A153/A153M covers hot-dip zinc coatings on iron and steel hardware. ASTM A123/A123M-24 covers many other iron and steel products. Check the product specification for the applicable standard and coating class; there is no single universal standard established here for all zinc-plated products.

A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. The thickness figures above come from an AGA comparison whose publication date is not stated on the consulted PDF page. They should not be treated as guaranteed values for a particular item or as a substitute for its coating specification.

Why coating process and coverage matter

Hot-dip galvanizing produces a metallurgically bonded zinc-iron coating, while electroplating deposits a thinner surface coating in the AGA comparison. The same comparison reports bond-strength figures of 3,600 psi for hot-dip galvanizing and 300–600 psi for electroplating and zinc plating. Those are AGA comparison figures, not universal guarantees for a purchased part. AGA fasteners guide

Geometry matters as much as the headline coating type. Threads, corners and recesses can be difficult to coat consistently, so check what the product standard says about the relevant locations and inspect the actual specification. A coating label alone does not establish how a particular part was made or how much zinc it carries.

Is galvanized steel stronger than zinc-plated steel?

“Stronger” is ambiguous. It may refer to the strength of the steel itself, how firmly the coating bonds, coating thickness, or resistance to corrosion in a particular environment. The coating process does not by itself tell you the structural strength or load capacity of a bolt or other component; use the product’s mechanical grade and engineering requirements for that.

For coating bond strength, the AGA comparison lists 3,600 psi for hot-dip galvanizing versus 300–600 psi for electroplating and zinc plating. Because these are association comparison values, do not use them as guaranteed performance for a specific product. AGA fasteners guide

Which coating lasts longer outdoors?

There is no reliable, broadly applicable number of years that can be assigned to every galvanized part versus every zinc-plated part. Service life depends on coating thickness or mass, the exposure environment and the specific product. A thinner coating may be suitable for some uses, but a coating name alone cannot establish how long a component will last outdoors. The AGA recommends selecting a coating for the application and environment. AGA coating-selection guidance AGA guidance on coating thickness and weight

Which ASTM standard should a specification reference?

Hardware: ASTM A153/A153M

ASTM A153/A153M covers hot-dip zinc coatings on iron and steel hardware. Its scope describes immersion in molten zinc long enough for a metallurgical reaction between zinc and surface iron, producing bonded zinc/iron alloy layers. It sets coating thickness or mass by hardware class and addresses appearance, adherence and inspection. ASTM A153/A153M catalog page

Many other steel products: ASTM A123/A123M-24

ASTM A123/A123M-24 covers hot-dip galvanized coatings on many rolled, pressed and forged shapes, castings, plates, bars and strips. Its scope excludes certain continuously galvanized sheet, pipe, tube and wire products, and routes hardware that is centrifuged or otherwise handled to remove excess zinc to A153/A153M. Confirm the current edition and the contract requirements when writing a specification. ASTM A123/A123M-24 catalog page

For zinc-plated parts, identify the product’s specified coating and class rather than assuming that a hot-dip galvanizing standard applies. Requirements can vary by product and application.

How to choose for a construction project

  • Identify the process. Ask whether the item is batch hot-dip galvanized, electroplated or finished by another zinc-coating process. “Galvanized” alone may not identify a precise process because different zinc-coating processes are often described generically as galvanizing. AGA coating-selection guidance
  • Match the standard to the product. Use A153/A153M for covered hardware and A123/A123M-24 for covered products within that standard’s scope; check exclusions and project requirements.
  • Consider exposure and service-life needs. Assess the environment and required service life rather than relying on a generic lifespan claim.
  • Check geometry and coverage. Pay particular attention to threads, edges and recessed areas where coating coverage may differ.
  • Balance practical requirements. Compare appearance, availability and cost alongside exposure and coating requirements. The AGA describes selection as application- and environment-dependent. AGA coating-selection guidance

Buying galvanized bolts

When purchasing hot-dip galvanized bolts, verify the bolt grade, dimensions, thread fit and required coating specification. Confirm that the product’s documentation identifies the coating process and applicable hardware standard; a product description that only says “galvanized” may not provide enough detail for a specification-driven job.
