If a Samsung front-load washer door is locked and the power is out, the safe fix is to drain the water trapped inside through the emergency drain hose, then restart the machine once power returns. Do not pry, twist, or force the door. The method applies only to front-load models that have a lower emergency drain hose, and Samsung’s guidance does not cover top-load washers.
Check that your washer can be drained this way
Start by confirming the machine type. The emergency drain procedure is written for front-load washers. Samsung Australia states plainly that “The emergency drain feature is NOT applicable for top-loaders.” Open the lower service panel at the front of the machine and look for the emergency drain tube, which is a hose with a cap that sits behind a small filter cover.
Not every front-load model has this hardware. Samsung US notes that “Some older front load models do not have a pump filter or an emergency drain hose.” If your panel does not contain a drain tube, stop here and move to the troubleshooting section below. Panel layout, error codes, and settings differ between models and markets, so the washer’s own manual overrides any general steps where the two disagree.
Drain the washer step by step
Set aside a clear floor area and gather several old towels, a shallow tray, and at least one large, sturdy container. Then follow these steps in order.

- Switch the washer off and unplug it. If the power is already out, the machine is effectively disconnected, but confirm the control panel is dark before you continue.
- Lay towels and containers beside the lower filter cover. Expect a substantial volume of water, and expect it to spill if the container is too small.
- Open the lower filter cover gently. On some models a latch releases the cover. Samsung Australia notes that a coin or thin metal object may help if the panel will not open. Use light pressure only; if it still refuses to move, the panel design on your model may differ, so check the manual rather than forcing it.
- Pull out the emergency drain tube slowly. Hold the tube over the container, then open its cap to release the water. Water can come out in a steady rush, so keep the tube pointed into the container and swap in a second container as the first fills.
- Clean the pump filter only if your manual calls for it, and only after draining is complete. Removing the filter early can release more water. When refitting it, seat the filter and close its knob firmly. Samsung warns that incorrect fitting can cause leaks or operational failure. A clogged pump filter can trigger error code 5C on the UK-market guidance.
- Close the drain cap, return the tube to its holder, and shut the panel. Then restore power and turn the washer off and back on. Samsung’s UK and US guidance says the door should reopen after this drain and restart sequence.
Because the release step is a power cycle, the door will not unlock while the machine has no power. If the power outage continues, you can complete the drain and wait until electricity returns before restarting.
Safety limits you must respect
- Never force the door during a hot wash, drying, or spin. Samsung UK states: “Do not open the washer door by force while it is operating (high-temperature washing, drying, or spinning).” The lock prevents flooding and injury, and a hot cycle can leave hot water inside.
- Treat drained water as a burn risk. If the cycle was hot, let the machine cool before opening the drain, and avoid touching the water as it runs out.
- Unplug before you open the service panel. Electrical components sit near the drain path, and water and power should never meet.
- Do not use the drain hose on a top-loader. Samsung’s emergency drain guidance does not apply to those machines.

- Water is still inside. Look for remaining water in the drum or the pump area. Drain again if needed.
- The cycle has not fully finished. The door lock may stay engaged until the machine completes its internal sequence.
- The mechanism needs a brief delay. Wait a few minutes after the restart before assuming a fault.
- Child Lock is active. Samsung says Child Lock settings and button combinations vary by model. Restarting the washer does not turn Child Lock off, so consult the manual for the release sequence.
If none of these resolve the problem, or if the drain hose is missing, damaged, or cannot be reached, contact Samsung service. Give the exact model number, since a replacement drain hose or pump filter must match your model. Do not assume a generic part will fit.

The maintenance intervals in the UK and Australian guides differ because they cover different filters and different regional recommendations. Follow the interval in the manual for your own market rather than mixing the two.

The emergency drain hose is built into the front-load machine. If your model lacks one, you cannot use this method, and draining will require service. If the hose is present but damaged, a replacement may be available. Search for “Samsung washer emergency drain hose replacement” and filter results by your exact model number, then confirm compatibility with Samsung before buying anything.
