Daisy Chaining Extension Cords and Power Strips: Safety Guide

Daisy chaining extension cords or power strips can cause overload, overheating, equipment failure, shock, or fire. Use one suitable device directly from a wall outlet; consult an electrician for fixed wiring or additional outlets.

Daisy chaining portable power means plugging one extension cord or power strip into another, leaving only the first device connected to the wall. Avoid it: interconnected cords and strips can overload equipment, build heat, fail, trip breakers, and create shock or fire hazards. For temporary power, use one appropriately rated device plugged directly into a wall receptacle. Fixed receptacle wiring is a different job; have a qualified electrician determine the right installation for your location.

What “daisy chain” means for portable power

In portable-power safety guidance, daisy chaining is connecting two or more extension cords, power strips, or a combination of them in series, with only the first device plugged into the wall. The term in this guide applies to portable cords and strips—not every arrangement of fixed receptacles in a building.

Electrical Safety First puts its consumer advice plainly: “Don’t plug an extension lead into another extension lead (known as ‘daisy chaining’).” It also recommends using one extension lead or cable reel per wall socket. Electrical Safety First’s extension-lead guidance uses UK terminology; it should not be read as a statement of electrical code requirements everywhere.

Why connecting cords or strips in series is risky

Each connected device and cord contributes to the electrical path. Longer interconnected cords can add resistance and heat, and the connected equipment may draw more than the setup can safely support. The cited safety guidance identifies overload, heating, equipment failure, tripped breakers, electric shock, and fire as concerns.

The U.S. Office of Compliance warns that interconnected cords and power strips can overload equipment and contribute to failure or fire. Its workplace factsheet reports more than 2,400 observed daisy-chain instances—approximately 20% of all recorded violations—in a biennial inspection conducted during the 109th Congress; the factsheet does not state a calendar year for that inspection. The figure describes that inspection, not a current rate for all workplaces. Office of Compliance factsheet

The University of Washington’s safety manual likewise defines daisy chaining as two or more extension cords or power strips in series with only one connected to an outlet, and identifies overload and fire risk. University of Washington safety manual

How to supply temporary power more safely

  1. Choose one device for the job. Select a single extension lead or power strip with a current rating suitable for the intended load and a cord length that reaches the outlet without another cord or strip.
  2. Plug it directly into a wall receptacle. Do not connect extension leads to one another or connect power strips together. A surge protector does not make an interconnected setup safe.
  3. Use equipment suited to the environment. Follow the product’s instructions and use a cord designed for the conditions, including indoor or outdoor use as applicable. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission identifies observable extension-cord safety characteristics that include wire size, strain relief, polarization, continuity, indoor outlet covers, and outdoor cord jackets. CPSC extension-cord guidance
  4. Reduce the distance or demand if needed. Move equipment closer to a receptacle or make another practical change rather than extending the setup with additional cords. The Office of Compliance recommends an appropriately rated strip with a suitable cord length, moving equipment closer to an outlet, or other practical adjustments.

When to stop using a cord or power strip

Inspect portable power equipment and stop using it if it is damaged or abnormally hot. Burning smells, burn marks, buzzing or crackling, blown fuses, and tripped breakers are warning signs associated with unsafe equipment or a problematic setup. Do not respond to repeated trips by adding another cord or strip; discontinue use and have the equipment and circuit assessed by a qualified person.

When the answer is a fixed outlet, not another extension cord

If extension leads and adaptors are a regular workaround for too few outlets, consider having additional fixed outlets installed. Electrical Safety First recommends that recurring need be addressed with additional wall sockets installed by a registered electrician. The appropriate professional designation and requirements vary by location.

“Daisy chain wiring” can also be used to ask about fixed receptacles wired from one outlet location to another. Portable-cord advice does not establish how fixed receptacle wiring should be designed or whether a particular arrangement is permitted. Those answers depend on the installation and local rules; consult a qualified electrician rather than applying portable extension-cord guidance to building wiring.

Choosing one portable product: what to check

  • Current rating: It must suit the intended load; a rating is not permission to connect devices in series.
  • Reach: Choose enough cord length to reach the outlet directly, or relocate the equipment.
  • Environment: Verify that the cord or strip is suitable for where it will be used and follow its instructions.
  • Condition: Reject damaged equipment and stop use if it develops abnormal heat or other warning signs.

The Smithsonian Institution’s safety manual also depicts acceptable and unacceptable combinations of extension cords and relocatable power taps. Smithsonian Institution safety manual
