On Samsung washers that offer it, Sanitize is a high-heat cycle for heavily soiled, colorfast clothing. Samsung’s US guide says it heats water to 150°F; its Canadian guide describes about 65°C. Those figures come from regional guidance, not a universal specification, so check your washer’s model-specific manual and the care labels on your clothes.
What does the Sanitize cycle do?
Samsung describes Sanitize as a clothing wash for heavily soiled, colorfast garments. Its purpose is to use high heat to eliminate bacteria. Samsung’s US cycle guide gives a temperature of 150°F, while its Canadian washer guide says about 65°C. The difference is a reason to rely on the guidance for your specific model and market, not to assume one temperature applies to every Samsung washer.
These are Samsung’s descriptions of the cycle, not a universal hygiene guarantee. The available information does not establish a single germ-kill rate for every washer’s Sanitize cycle.
Is Sanitize the same as Steam Sanitize or Hygiene Steam?
No single name or setting applies across Samsung’s product range. Some models and regional guides describe Steam Sanitize or Hygiene Steam, but the terms should not be treated as interchangeable with Sanitize on every washer. Samsung India, for example, describes Hygiene Steam on selected front-load models and advises using the display or manual for availability and settings. Its guidance says to use a temperature of 60°C or higher for the best hygiene results.

A Samsung New Zealand product guide for model WA14A8376GW/SA reports 99.9% bacteria elimination for its Hygiene Steam cycle. The guide’s footnote says Samsung’s internal test used an IEC 5 kg load at water level 6 and compared results with a Samsung conventional washer, model WA22T7870KV; it does not state a publication year. That model-specific, internally tested claim does not establish the result for other models or for Sanitize cycles generally.
Sanitize, steam cycles, and tub-cleaning cycles
Sanitize and steam-related cycles wash laundry. Self Clean, Self Clean +, and Pure Cycle are maintenance options Samsung describes for cleaning the washer itself. Use the cycle that matches the job, and follow the instructions for your exact model.

| Cycle name | What it is for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sanitize | High-heat wash for heavily soiled, colorfast garments, according to Samsung US and Canada guidance. | Confirm the cycle and settings on your model; check garment care labels. |
| Steam Sanitize or Hygiene Steam | Laundry cycle names documented for certain models or regional product lines. | Availability, temperature, and steam behavior are model-specific; consult the manual or display. |
| Self Clean, Self Clean +, or Pure Cycle | Washer-maintenance cycles, not clothing washes. | Use the maintenance cycle and schedule specified for your washer. |
How to decide whether to use Sanitize
- Check that your washer has the cycle. Look at the control panel or search the user manual for your exact model number. Samsung says available cycles vary by washer.
- Check the fabric care labels. Use the cycle only for garments whose care instructions allow the high-heat treatment. Samsung’s stated intended use is heavily soiled, colorfast clothing; that does not make the cycle suitable for delicate, non-colorfast, or heat-sensitive items.
- Choose the precise cycle name shown on your machine. Sanitize, Steam Sanitize, and Hygiene Steam may have different settings or availability. Do not assume one model’s instructions apply to another.
- Allow for hot water and model-specific door behavior. Water may be very hot after a hot cycle. In one Samsung Laundry Combo manual, the door stays locked if Steam Sanitize is stopped while the machine is heating. Treat that as guidance for the covered model, not a rule for all washers; follow your manual if a cycle is interrupted.
Use a maintenance cycle for washer odor
If the washer itself smells or needs tub maintenance, use its dedicated cleaning cycle rather than Sanitize, which is intended to wash clothes. Samsung’s US odor guidance recommends running the applicable Self Clean, Self Clean +, or Pure Cycle approximately monthly or every 30–40 loads. Follow your model’s manual for the correct cycle and procedure.
Samsung also names Tide Washing Machine Cleaner as an optional third-party product for odor assistance. It is not a required ingredient for a clothing Sanitize cycle. If you use a washer-cleaning product, follow its directions as well as the washer manual.
