The most useful impact-driver accessory is a correctly sized, impact-rated driver bit that matches the fastener you use most. Add socket adapters, nut drivers, holders or drilling accessories only when the task calls for them. Check the accessory’s interface and rating, and follow the instructions for your specific tool and accessory.
What accessories do you need for an impact driver?
Start with bits for the screws or fasteners you regularly install. The drive style and size must fit the fastener; an ill-fitting tip can slip or damage its recess. For impact-driver use, choose bits identified as impact-rated or impact-duty. Manufacturers describe features such as torsion zones intended to handle torque peaks, but those are product claims, not independent comparisons.
Milwaukee’s 26-piece SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty Drive and Fasten Set (model 48-32-4408) is one example, not a tested winner. Milwaukee lists Phillips, Torx, square and slotted bits in the set, along with a 1/4-inch hex-to-3/8-inch square adapter, nut drivers and a magnetic bit holder. Choose bits for your fasteners
Identify the screw’s drive profile, then match the bit type and size. Common categories include Phillips, Torx, hex, slotted and square. A compact selection suited to the fasteners on your jobs is more useful than a large assortment of profiles you do not use.

When does a socket adapter help?
A 1/4-inch hex-shank socket adapter lets a compatible impact driver turn a socket. The adapter’s square-drive end must match the socket’s drive size; the socket itself must fit the nut or bolt. Bosch lists adapters with 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch square-drive ends. Choose an adapter identified for impact use and confirm that both the adapter and socket are compatible with your tool and task. An adapter establishes a connection; it does not make every nut or bolt an appropriate job for an impact driver. The available manufacturer guidance does not set a universal load or torque boundary for large or high-load fasteners. Follow the tool maker’s operating instructions and use equipment suited to the fastener and application.

Can I use my impact driver as a drill?
Yes, for suitable drilling tasks with compatible accessories. DEWALT Support advises using impact-ready bits or a chuck adapter. Its guidance states: “Yes- either use impact ready bits or use a DW0521 to convert from 1/4" hex shank chuck to a 3 jaw 3/8" drill chuck.” The answer was updated February 14, 2023. A chuck adapter changes the connection, not the operating characteristics of the tool. DEWALT warns that an impact driver’s maximum speed may exceed a drill’s, depending on the model. Check your model’s instructions and speed range before drilling; do not assume a drill chuck adapter makes the driver suitable for every bit or material. For occasional holes, impact-ready drill bits, step bits or hole saws may suit specific jobs, but they are task-specific additions rather than essentials.

Which optional accessories suit specific tasks?
- Magnetic or locking bit holder: can help retain a bit or provide extra reach. Select an impact-duty holder compatible with your bit and tool.
- Magnetic nut driver: useful for a matching hex-head fastener. Choose the driver by the fastener’s actual size.
- Step bit or hole saw: consider these for the particular hole-making task and material, and verify the accessory is intended for your tool.

How to choose and use an accessory safely
- Identify the job. Match the accessory to the screw, nut, bolt or hole you need to make, and consider the material.
- Match the interface. Confirm the accessory’s shank fits the driver. For a socket adapter, match its square-drive end to the socket.
- Check the rating and instructions. Prefer accessories explicitly marked impact-rated or impact-duty for impact-driver work. Read the instructions for both the tool and accessory.
- Check model-specific limits. This is especially important when drilling with a chuck adapter, since speed varies by driver model.
- Use only task-appropriate combinations. A fitting adapter does not establish that a particular fastener or load is suitable for the driver.
