Their different widths make the plug fit a matching receptacle in only one orientation, preserving the appliance’s intended hot-and-neutral connections. The wider blade is not a ground prong, and polarization does not prove that an outlet is wired correctly.
Why is one prong bigger than the other?
The unequal blades are a safety feature called polarization. The wider blade connects to neutral; the narrower blade connects to hot. A matching receptacle has a wider neutral slot, so the plug cannot be inserted backward when the receptacle is properly configured.
That fixed orientation matters in some appliance designs. It helps ensure that a switch interrupts the hot conductor rather than leaving parts energized when the appliance is switched off. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development describes one example: reversed polarity can leave an exposed lamp socket energized even when its switch is off. OSHA likewise says correct polarity among hot, neutral, and grounding conductors must be maintained in branch-circuit plugs, receptacles, and connectors. Not every device depends on a fixed hot-neutral orientation in the same way. Some modern appliances are designed so orientation is immaterial, and some two-prong devices are double-insulated. The wider blade helps preserve intended wiring where it matters; it does not make every appliance safer in an identical way.

Is the wide blade a ground prong?
No. The wide blade is neutral, a normal circuit conductor. Ground is a separate protective conductor, commonly connected through a third wire and third prong on grounded equipment. OSHA notes that cord-connected equipment commonly uses this additional grounding conductor.
A polarized two-prong plug does not provide grounding and cannot replace a grounded plug. Do not remove or defeat a grounding pin to make a plug fit.

Does a polarized plug mean the outlet is safe?
No. The plug’s shape controls orientation only when it is paired with a correctly configured receptacle. It cannot correct reversed wiring, damaged contacts, or other installation problems. If a plug does not fit, or a receptacle appears damaged or incorrectly wired, do not force or modify the plug. Have a qualified electrician inspect the receptacle.
A plug-in receptacle tester may provide a basic check, but it does not diagnose every wiring fault or establish that an entire electrical installation is safe.

Where does this plug design apply?
This explanation applies to common North American polarized two-blade plugs, often called Type A or NEMA 1-15. Type A plugs are commonly polarized in North America, but conventions are not universal; ASME notes that this is not always the case in Japan. Plug shapes, voltage, and frequency vary around the world. Before using an appliance abroad, check its voltage and frequency rating and use a suitable, approved adapter. A shape adapter changes how a plug connects physically; it does not convert voltage or make incompatible equipment safe. What should you do if the wide blade will not fit?
- Do not cut, file, bend, or force the wider blade.
- Do not defeat a grounding pin or use an improvised adapter.
- Use a compatible, correctly polarized receptacle. If the outlet is damaged or suspected to be wired incorrectly, ask a qualified electrician to assess it.
- For travel, check the appliance’s voltage and frequency rating as well as the destination’s connector requirements.
The wider blade’s purpose is to identify neutral and prevent reverse insertion in a matching polarized receptacle. It is not a ground connection or a guarantee that the receptacle—or the rest of the wiring—is safe. Eaton, What Is a Polarized Plug?
