Understanding the Role of Ants in Your Garden Ecosystem

Ants may help soil, move seeds, and eat other insects, yet some protect aphids. Learn how to read their activity and decide whether action is needed.

Ants can help a garden by changing soil, moving seeds, and eating other insects—but some also protect aphids and other sap-feeding pests. Their effect depends on what they are doing and where. Watch the ants and inspect nearby plants before deciding whether to intervene.

What ants contribute to garden soil

As ants excavate nests, they create channels in soil that can help water and oxygen move through it. University of Maryland Extension describes ants, earthworms, termites, and plant roots as soil engineers that alter soil structure. This is one contribution to a much larger soil system—not proof that every nest improves every garden or that a visible mound measures soil health. University of Maryland Extension’s soil health factsheet explains the broader role of soil organisms.

How ants feed—and why their effects vary

Ant diets differ by species and may include seeds, nectar, and other insects. Many ants scavenge or act as generalist predators, so they may consume some insects considered garden pests. That does not mean ants will control a particular pest in a home garden.

A 2019 University of Maryland Extension report estimates that ants consume about 75% of the eggs and small larvae or nymphs of certain turf pests, including sod webworms, white grubs, cutworms, armyworms, and chinch bugs. That figure applies to specified pest stages in turfgrass environments; it is not an estimate of pest control in vegetable beds or ornamental gardens. The report also describes ants as predators and scavengers.

How ants move seeds

Some ants collect and carry seeds away from parent plants. Moving a seed can reduce competition for resources near the parent and may improve its chances of germinating and surviving as a seedling. The outcome depends on the plant, ant, and setting, so this ecological role should not be taken to mean that ants disperse every garden plant. University of Maryland Extension’s overview of insects discusses ants as seed dispersers.

Why ants may be tending aphids

Aphids feed on plant sap and excrete honeydew, a sugary substance ants may eat. In return, ants may protect aphids from predators. This creates a trade-off: ants can prey on some insects while helping plant-feeding pests persist.

If you see many ants climbing plant stems or gathering on new growth, inspect the undersides of leaves and stems for aphids or scale insects. Ant activity is a useful clue, not a diagnosis by itself, and ants are not eating the leaves simply because they are on a plant. Maryland Extension’s guide to aphids in home gardens and University of Illinois Extension’s explanation of aphids and ants describe this relationship.

What to do when ants appear

Observe where they are and what they are doing

Look for ants nesting in a lawn, moving across soil, entering a building, or repeatedly visiting a plant with aphids. Ant species differ in nesting habits and food preferences, so identification and location matter if you are considering control. Minnesota Extension’s ant guidance covers identification and management.

Spectracide Ant Shield Outdoor Killing Stakes, 6 Count
  • ANT BAIT STAKES: Kills the queen and destroys the colony – ants eat and return to the colony to kill others
  • POWERFUL BAIT: Starts killing in hours
  • KEEPS ANTS FROM COMING BACK: Long-lasting bait keeps killing up to 3 months
  • WEATHER-RESISTANT BAIT STATIONS: Use outdoors – kills ants where they breed

Tolerate activity that is not causing a problem

Many ants cause little actual damage, and lawn nests can often be left alone when their mounds are not creating an inconvenience. Decide based on observable effects on plants, lawn use, or structures rather than the mere presence of ants.

If aphids are harming a plant, address the aphids

Most aphid infestations cause little or no plant-health damage. When aphids are a problem, a strong spray of plain water can dislodge them. Shaking or hosing ants off a plant may also make aphids easier to manage. Check plants again afterward to see whether the problem persists. Minnesota Extension’s aphid guidance describes water sprays and natural enemies.

Beneficial insects, including aphid predators and parasitoids, help limit aphid populations. Maryland Extension recommends supporting these natural enemies by reducing pesticide use and planting a diversity of flowers; it advises against buying and releasing predators outdoors. For aphid control, it recommends integrated pest management and treating pesticides as a last resort after other methods fail.

Use ant control only when there is a clear need

If ants are causing a significant nuisance or damage, seek current local Extension advice before choosing a treatment. Management depends on the ant and its nest location. Minnesota Extension emphasizes locating and treating the nest rather than relying on sprays that kill only foraging workers. Follow the current product label and use a pesticide only where that use is permitted.
