Understanding Your Samsung Dishwasher: Why Is It Blinking Normal?

Samsung's US guidance says a Normal-only blink means the leak sensor detects moisture. Here's how to read the full light pattern, check your model, and decide next steps.

On Samsung’s US support guidance, a dishwasher blinking only the Normal light means its leak sensor has detected moisture. The machine may switch itself on and try to drain, and Samsung directs owners to Samsung Support for service. Before acting on that, confirm your model and sales market, because Samsung’s light meanings are not identical across every dishwasher.

What a Normal-only blink means on a US Samsung

Samsung’s US support article on blinking lights states that some Samsung dishwashers have no digital display, so error codes appear as blinking lights instead. The combination of lights that blinks is the code. For the Normal-only pattern, Samsung’s wording is that the light means the dishwasher’s leak sensor detects moisture.

That indication has two practical consequences. First, the dishwasher may turn itself on and attempt to drain, so you may hear or see activity without having started a cycle. Second, a sensor indication is not something to clear and ignore: the guidance places the next step with Samsung Support rather than with a home reset.

Read the full light pattern, not just Normal

A single light can mean something different when it blinks alongside another cycle light. Samsung’s US guidance gives these examples. The table is taken from that US article and should be checked against your own model’s manual, because the mapping is tied to the model family.

Blinking lights Meaning Samsung’s US guidance assigns
Normal only Leak sensor detects moisture
Normal and Delicate A stuck button
Normal and Quick The dishwasher is too hot
Normal, Delicate, and Quick Water is too hot

Write down exactly which lights are blinking before you look anything up. “Normal is blinking” and “Normal and Quick are blinking” lead to different answers.

Blinking lights can be normal operation

Samsung’s US article also warns that lights may blink during regular use. A blink is therefore not automatically a fault. It becomes a question to investigate when the dishwasher is not working as it should. Treat the light as a possible error if any of the following applies:

  • The machine stops partway through a cycle.
  • It runs continuously and does not finish.
  • It attempts to drain or starts on its own when you have not started it.
  • Any other behaviour is unusual for that unit.

Check your model and market first

Samsung publishes separate support material by region, and the Canadian version is limited to dishwashers sold in Canada. Samsung Canada’s article on blinking lights, updated July 3, 2026, says a Normal-only pattern can indicate detected moisture or, on Waterwall models, a blocked water reflector. That means the same light can point to different causes depending on the product line and where it was sold.

The model code is printed on the appliance label, and it is the reference you need when you contact Samsung. Use the support page for that exact model and sales region, not the first light table you find.

What to do when Normal is blinking

  1. Record the full light pattern. Note which lights are blinking and whether the machine is running, stopped, or behaving oddly.
  2. Find the model code on the appliance label. Confirm whether the unit is a Waterwall model and where it was sold.
  3. Match the pattern to the correct support page. For a US Normal-only pattern, the Samsung US guidance points to moisture detection and to Samsung Support. For a Canadian Normal-only pattern on a Waterwall model, check for a blocked water reflector as well.
  4. Check for an actual leak or overflow. If you find water outside the dishwasher, follow the safety instructions in the manual for your model before doing anything else, and contact Samsung Support.
  5. Troubleshoot before resetting. Samsung’s guidance says that resetting or clearing an error without resolving its cause may allow it to return or may impair the dishwasher. Work through the cause first.
  6. Contact Samsung Support if the problem persists. Escalate if the dishwasher still will not operate normally, the Normal-only blink continues, or your exact light combination is not listed for your model.

What this guidance cannot tell you

The published guidance does not identify a universal part, a repair procedure for the leak sensor, or a home fix for a Normal-only blink. Without your model code, your region, the full light pattern, and a description of how the machine behaves, no specific repair can be responsibly recommended. A leak alarm or a detergent change will not address a sensor indication that is already present. For a Normal-only blink on a US unit, the official route is Samsung Support.

Keep the model-specific manual nearby. It is the document that matches the light table to your exact dishwasher.

Samsung’s US and Canadian support articles are the primary references cited here. Samsung’s US article on error codes is also relevant for its instruction to troubleshoot before clearing a code.

In short: a Normal-only blink on a US Samsung means moisture detected by the leak sensor, a possible self-start drain, and a call to Samsung Support. Verify the model and region first, and do not reset until the cause has been addressed.
