Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA log burner installation costs about £2,800 on average in Costwise’s 2026 guide, with guide prices ranging from £1,500 to £5,000. The final cost depends heavily on the flue, chimney, hearth and amount of building work. Once installed, look after the stove by removing ash, cleaning the glass and checking its seals and firebricks; arrange professional sweeping and servicing as well.
How much does it cost to install a log burner?
Costwise’s UK guide gives a typical supplied-and-fitted installation price of £2,800, with a guide range of £1,500–£5,000. These are Costwise estimates, not an official national average or a guaranteed quote. Its dataset is identified as version 2026-10-05 and covers 158 jobs; the guide says prices were reviewed in June 2026 and the page updated in September 2026. See Costwise’s guide and dataset details.
Costwise’s 2026 guide by flue and building work
| Installation scope | Guide estimate |
|---|---|
| Existing chimney | £1,500–£3,000 supplied and fitted |
| Existing chimney with a new liner | £2,000–£3,800 |
| No chimney; twin-wall flue | £3,000–£5,000 |
| New hearth and surround | May add £400–£1,500 |
All figures in the table are Costwise guide estimates, not fixed prices. The flue route and condition, stove make and output, liner, hearth, surround and making-good work can change the bill. A site survey and itemized local quotes are the best way to establish what your home will require.
Compare like-for-like written quotes
Check that each quote specifies the same appliance and output, chimney condition, flue or liner work, hearth and surround, making good, labour, commissioning and compliance paperwork. Confirm whether a carbon monoxide alarm and notice plate are included, and ask what is excluded. A lower headline price may simply cover less work.

Check suitability and installation rules before buying
HETAS says installations must follow Building Regulations and the manufacturer’s instructions. In England and Wales, solid-fuel installations have required notification to Local Authority Building Control since April 2005. The route is either through a competent-person scheme, such as HETAS, or directly through the local authority. HETAS says its installers provide a Certificate of Compliance, fit a carbon monoxide alarm and provide a notice plate. Requirements and processes should be checked for the specific UK jurisdiction. HETAS installation guidance.
Check the installer’s current registration and company details, request a site survey, and get the full scope in writing. Also check whether your home is in a smoke-control area: GOV.UK says smoke emissions are restricted there, and wood or other unauthorized fuels may be burned only in an exempt appliance. Use only fuels approved by the stove manufacturer. GOV.UK smoke-control area rules.

How to clean a wood burner safely
Let the stove cool fully and follow its manual for safe shutdown, cleaning products and ash handling. DEFRA and HETAS identify these routine owner checks and cleaning tasks; the maker’s instructions take precedence for your model. DEFRA stove-care guidance and HETAS consumer advice.

How often should a chimney be swept and a stove serviced?
DEFRA recommends professional chimney sweeping at least once a year and says an annual sweep helps address soot and tar build-up, which can reduce efficiency and increase chimney-fire risk. HETAS’s consumer leaflet recommends sweeping at least twice a year when burning wood and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuel. HETAS also notes that frequency depends on the appliance and fuel. Ask a competent chimney sweep to advise on a schedule for your use and follow the stove maker’s guidance. DEFRA maintenance guidance and HETAS consumer leaflet.
Arrange professional servicing at least annually. DEFRA’s advice is: “Get your stove serviced once a year.” A service is separate from routine cleaning and chimney sweeping; follow the manufacturer’s service requirements and use a suitably qualified technician.

DEFRA defines dry wood as having a moisture content of 20% or less and recommends checking it with a moisture meter. Wood above 20% can produce more smoke, particles and tar deposits, damage the stove and chimney, and increase maintenance costs and chimney-fire risk. DEFRA wood-fuel guidance.
For wood sold in volumes under 2m³, DEFRA says the Ready to Burn logo indicates moisture content of 20% or less. Follow the fuel recommendations for your appliance, and do not burn treated wood such as painted, stained or chemically treated timber.
