If your Samsung range or wall oven shows tESt, tE 5t, or tE5t, the appliance is most likely in Demo mode, a retail display setting. In that mode the oven and cooktop will not heat. Samsung does not give one button sequence that works on every model, so the exit steps must come from the user manual for your exact model. This guide explains what the message means, how to confirm it, how to work through the model-specific steps, and when to stop and contact Samsung.
What the “Test” message means
Samsung’s official support pages identify tESt, tE 5t, and tE5t as Demo mode. This is a display setting, not a hardware fault code. Samsung’s range and wall oven error code page states: “The range is in Demo mode. The oven and cooktop will not heat. That distinction matters. The message explains why an oven may not heat, but it does not by itself show that a heating element, control board, or sensor has failed. Do not buy replacement parts based only on this display.
Confirm you are looking at Demo mode
Demo mode is not always shown in the same way. Depending on the model, you may see:

- A small “d” or “D” icon on some models.
- The word “DEMO” on some wall ovens.

If the display shows a different text or a numeric code, Demo mode is probably not the cause. Samsung lists separate codes for ranges and wall ovens, and the correct meaning depends on the appliance, so look up that exact code on the matching Samsung page.
Turn Demo mode off
Samsung does not publish a universal exit sequence. Button layouts, touch panels, and menus differ between models, and a sequence that works on one range may do nothing on another. Use this order:

- Find the full model number on the appliance label or in your paperwork. It is often on a sticker inside the oven door frame or on the control panel edge.
- Open the Samsung user manual for that exact model and go to its Demo mode section.
- Follow those instructions exactly, one step at a time. If the controls on your oven do not match the manual’s pictures, stop and check the model number again. - If the manual has no Demo mode instructions, contact Samsung support and give the model number. Do not try button combinations found for a different range.
Check that the oven heats normally
The fix is complete only when the display returns to a normal clock or standby screen and the oven heats when you set a temperature. Set the oven to a moderate temperature, such as 350°F, and wait for the preheat indicator to finish. Use an oven thermometer placed on the center rack to compare the reading with the setpoint.

Gas cooktops: what still works in Demo mode
On a gas range in Demo mode, the cooktop burners may still ignite even though the oven and cooktop are not designed to heat for cooking. Treat burners as live. Do not leave them unattended, and do not assume a lit burner means the unit is ready for use. Gas-pressure and ignition problems are a separate issue. - The manual gives no Demo mode steps for your model, and Samsung support cannot confirm them.
- The test message returns after you have exited Demo mode.
- The oven will not heat after Demo mode is off and the temperature check shows no normal heating.
- You see a different code, a burning smell, or any gas odor. Turn off the gas supply and call for help rather than continuing to test.
When you call, have the full model number, the displayed text, and a description of what the oven does at the set temperature ready.
