Wildfires start when an ignition source meets burnable vegetation in conditions that let a fire take hold and spread. Lightning is a natural source; people also ignite wildland fuels in many ways, from escaped campfires and debris burns to equipment, vehicles, power infrastructure, and arson. In the United States, federal estimates put the human-caused share at roughly 85–88%, with the exact figure depending on the source and period.
What causes wildfires?
A wildfire requires an ignition source and fuel—such as dry grass, brush, or trees. Weather and site conditions influence whether an ignition takes hold and how it spreads. A spark or ember can start a fire; dry vegetation and wind can help it escape or grow. These are related but distinct parts of the process.
The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) describes the two broad ignition classes as nature, generally lightning, and human activity. Human-caused ignitions include a wide range of activities and failures, rather than one single type of event.
Are most wildfires caused by humans?
In the United States, two federal sources estimate that humans cause most wildfires, but their figures use different periods and should not be treated as one permanent rate.

| National Park Service (NPS) | Nearly 85 percent | U.S. Wildland Fire Management Information and U.S. Forest Service Research Data Archive data from 2000–2017. NPS: Wildfire Causes and Evaluations |
| National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) | 88 percent | 10-year average of U.S. wildfires, as of 2023. NIFC: Wildfire Investigation |
The estimates differ in time window and source framing; they are not necessarily contradictory. They describe U.S. wildfires, not a global share, and neither establishes which ignition type burns more acres or causes greater damage.
How does lightning start a wildfire?
Lightning can transfer heat and electrical energy to vegetation or other burnable material. The NPS explains that a lightning strike involves leaders and return strokes, and distinguishes short-duration, high-current “cold” lightning from longer-duration “hot” lightning. Its article says fires are usually started by unusually long-lasting hot lightning bolts; that is an accessible description, not a complete account of every lightning ignition. How do human activities ignite wildfires?
People can directly ignite vegetation or create conditions that let a small ignition escape. NIFC’s statistical categories were revised in 2020, so category names should be understood within that classification rather than as a timeless taxonomy.
- Recreation and open burning: unattended or incompletely extinguished campfires, escaped debris burns, and other open burning can send embers into nearby vegetation. Wind, inadequate clearance, and lack of attendance increase the risk.
- Equipment and vehicles: hot exhaust, hot metal fragments, friction, or a spark from poorly maintained or improperly operated equipment can ignite dry fuels. A trailer chain dragging on a hard surface can also create sparks.
- Infrastructure and transportation: power infrastructure and railroad operations are among the recognized human cause categories.
- Other activities: fireworks, firearms and explosives, smoking, arson, and other causes also appear in agency categories.
These examples describe mechanisms, not a ranking: they do not show that every cause is equally common or most common in every place or year. See NIFC’s investigation guidance for cause categories and ignition mechanisms.

What do cause statistics tell us—and what do they not?
Cause records can be incomplete. A 2025 study by Yavar Pourmohamad and coauthors, indexed by the U.S. Forest Service, analyzed western U.S. fires from 1992–2020. Its model had more than 70% overall out-of-sample accuracy, with 93% accuracy for classifying fires as natural versus human-caused and 55% accuracy for distinguishing among 11 human ignition classes. These are model performance results, not percentages of fires caused by each source.
The study included 150,247 fires with unknown ignition sources. For those unknown-cause records, the model attributed the largest percentages to equipment/vehicle use (21%), lightning (20%), and arson/incendiarism (18%). These are model estimates for unknown records, not confirmed cause findings for each fire. U.S. Forest Service Research and Development: study record

Cause investigation helps agencies target prevention and, where warranted, determine responsibility. As NIFC puts it, “Wildfires are caused by nature, generally lightning, or by human activity.” The NPS explains that “Wildfire investigators seek to understand the cause so agencies can prepare and implement prevention strategies.”

Follow local restrictions and conditions; general safety advice is not permission to burn at a particular place or time. NIFC recommends these practices:

- For debris burns: check local permit requirements and restrictions, attend the burn for its full duration, clear vegetation around it, and keep suppression tools available. Windblown embers or fire creeping into uncleared vegetation can cause an escape.
- For campfires: follow local rules and fully extinguish the fire before leaving it.
- For equipment and vehicles: use and maintain equipment safely, and take care with hot exhaust, metal parts, friction, and towing chains.
- For target shooting: follow fire-safe practices and local restrictions.
NIFC states, “All human-caused fires are preventable if proper care and attention is taken to prevent that ignition spark.” This is agency prevention guidance, not a guarantee that every ignition can practically be prevented in every circumstance. Consult NIFC’s wildfire investigation and prevention guidance and local authorities for applicable rules.
