Treadmill Suddenly Stopped Working and Blew a Fuse: What to Check

A blown fuse is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Identify which device tripped and when, check the external power safely, and stop using the treadmill if it trips again.

A treadmill that suddenly stops and blows a fuse may have an overloaded circuit, a damaged power connection, a tripped treadmill breaker, or an internal electrical or motor fault. The fuse is a warning, not a diagnosis. First identify exactly which fuse or breaker opened and when it happened. If it trips again, leave the treadmill unplugged and have the cause diagnosed; do not keep resetting it or fit a fuse based on a generic rating.

First identify what tripped and when

“Blew a fuse” can mean several different things: the household circuit breaker opened, the treadmill’s reset breaker tripped, a fuse in the plug opened, or an internal fuse failed. These are not interchangeable, and the correct next step depends on the machine and the protection device involved.

Note what the treadmill was doing at the moment power was lost:

  • It tripped as soon as you switched it on.
  • It tripped after the belt began moving, before anyone stepped on.
  • It tripped after someone stepped onto the moving belt.
  • The console stayed on, but the belt stopped.

Precor’s troubleshooting guidance uses these timing differences to help distinguish possible circuit overload conditions; they do not prove overload is the cause of your treadmill’s fault. Record the make and model, which device opened, and the timing before contacting the manufacturer or a repair technician.

What to check safely before calling for service

1. Stop if there are signs of damage or a repeat trip

If you see smoke, smell burning, find a visibly damaged cord, or the fuse or breaker trips again, switch the treadmill off, unplug it if that can be done safely, and leave it out of use. Do not keep resetting the device to see whether the treadmill will run. Repeated trips need a diagnosis of the underlying condition.

2. Check the external power path

With the treadmill switched off, check that the outlet works, the plug is fully seated, the cord has no visible damage, and the treadmill’s power switch is on. Check whether the household breaker has tripped. Do not open the treadmill or reach into it while it is connected to power. If the owner’s manual gives an internal-connection check, follow its shutoff and unplugging instructions; Horizon, for example, tells users to switch off, unplug, and wait 60 seconds before beginning its relevant checks.

  • Compatible with GE microwaves, replaces GE WB27X10388

3. Confirm the circuit and connection meet the exact model’s requirements

Use the owner’s manual for the treadmill’s model and the electrical service in your region. Requirements are not universal. Horizon Fitness says most of its North American treadmills require 120 volts and recommends a dedicated 15–20 A circuit, a grounded outlet, and a direct connection without an extension cord or surge protector. Those are Horizon recommendations for its North American machines, not a rating to apply to every treadmill.

4. Do not substitute a fuse or breaker with a different rating

The correct fuse depends on the specific treadmill and the location of the fuse. The make, model, and fuse marking are needed to establish the right part. Do not install a higher-rated fuse, buy a generic replacement, or replace a control board or motor based only on the fact that a fuse opened.

What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you

If the console is completely dead

Start with the outlet, cord, plug, switch, and household circuit. Manufacturer troubleshooting guidance also identifies possible faults in the power switch, wiring, console cable, motor-control board, or treadmill breaker. These are possibilities to diagnose, not a basis for guessing which part failed.

If the console works but the belt stops

This is a different symptom from a fully dead console. Model-specific troubleshooting may check the drive belt, motor bearings, and wiring for loose, crimped, damaged, disconnected, or burnt connections. Leave internal electrical and motor work to a qualified technician unless the manual explicitly provides a safe owner procedure.

6 Pack Ceramic Fuses 15 Amp 250V, 6x32mm Slow-Blow Time Delay Fuses - Replacement for Electronics, Power Supplies, LED Drivers, Small Appliances (15A)
  • ✔️ 【PRECISION 15A 250V SPECIFICATION】 – Each fuse is accurately rated at 105Amps and 250 Volts, with a standard 6mm x 32mm (0.24" x 1.18") ceramic tube size. This reliable specification ensures safe and correct operation in a wide range of low-voltage electronic circuits and household devices.
  • ✔️ 【TIME-DELAY (SLOW-BLOW) PROTECTION】 – Engineered with a slow-blow (time-delay) characteristic to prevent nuisance blowing. This design allows the fuse to withstand temporary, harmless current surges (like when a motor starts up) while still providing reliable protection against sustained dangerous overloads and short circuits.
  • ✔️ 【HIGH-QUALITY CERAMIC CONSTRUCTION】 – Built for durability and safety. The fuse body is made of robust ceramic material that provides excellent heat resistance and electrical insulation. The end caps are typically made of plated metal alloys for a secure connection.
  • ✔️ 【HIGH PERFORMANCE & RELIABILITY】 – Designed for demanding applications. Our fuses feature a high interrupting rating (breaking capacity), meaning they can safely stop very high fault currents. The construction ensures stable performance over a wide operating temperature range for long-term reliability.
  • ✔️ 【CONVENIENT 6-PACK & SAFETY COMPLIANCE】 – Get great value and peace of mind. This practical 10-piece pack ensures you have spares on hand. The product is designed to meet common international safety standards, providing a trustworthy solution for your electronic repair and protection needs

If the trip happens as the belt starts or someone steps on

The timing helps a technician narrow the fault, but it does not identify one by itself. Tell the service provider whether the trip happened at power-up, with the belt moving unloaded, or after a person stepped onto it. A tripped household breaker and a treadmill’s own breaker also point to different parts of the power path.

Could lubrication be related?

Poor lubrication can increase friction and may contribute to premature failure of a treadmill’s belt, deck, motor, or electronics, according to Horizon Fitness. But lubrication is not a confirmed explanation or repair for a blown fuse. First confirm that the treadmill’s manual calls for lubrication and identifies the deck as a type that should be lubricated. Horizon’s guidance applies to silicone surfaces and says waxed decks are maintenance-free; do not lubricate a waxed deck.

When to arrange diagnosis

Arrange service if the fuse or breaker trips again, if the cord or machine appears damaged, or if the fault appears to involve internal wiring, the motor, or the control electronics. Give the technician the brand and model, region, device that tripped, and the point in the startup or exercise sequence when it happened. Ask for diagnosis of the cause of the trip—not just replacement of the fuse or another component—so the protection device is not left responding to an unresolved fault. Manufacturer support is also an appropriate starting point for model-specific requirements and service guidance.
