How to Choose a Raised Garden Bed: Materials, Size, Soil, and Setup

A useful raised bed depends on your site, reach, material, and watering routine—not an unverified ranking. Learn how to choose its size, fill, and construction.

A raised bed can make gardening easier when native soil is poor or compacted, a site stays wet, or bending and kneeling are difficult. There is no well-supported current “top six” ranking here: product models, prices, configurations, and availability change, so choosing by your site, dimensions, material, and upkeep is more useful than relying on a dated list.

What a raised bed can—and cannot—solve

Raised beds let you create a defined growing area with soil suited to your crops. They can help when native soil is compacted or poor, and they can improve drainage on a wet site. The soil may warm earlier in spring than surrounding ground, but a raised bed still needs appropriate sunlight and convenient access to water.

Sun needs depend on what you plan to grow. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends six to eight hours of sun for crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants; leafy crops such as lettuce and radishes can tolerate less. University of Minnesota Extension’s raised-bed guidance offers region-specific practical advice.

Choose a material for your site and maintenance tolerance

Raised beds can be built from wood, metal, masonry, plastic, or fabric. Compare expected durability, upkeep, cost, and the product’s specific material or treatment description rather than assuming a whole category is safe or maintenance-free.

Material What to consider
Wood Cedar and hemlock generally last longer than pine and fir, but cost more, according to Minnesota Extension. Avoid old lumber and CCA-treated wood, which can leach arsenic. Check the labeling for any newer treatment.
Galvanized steel A common alternative to wood. Minnesota Extension notes zinc leaching can be a concern in highly acidic soil (pH below 5). It also cautions that some prefabricated beds sold online have been found to contain lead; verify the specific product’s materials and sourcing rather than treating this as a claim about all metal beds.
Masonry, plastic, or fabric These are also used for raised beds. The cited extension guidance does not establish a comparative durability ranking for specific products in these materials, so assess the manufacturer’s specifications and suitability for your site.

For copper-azole-treated Douglas-fir beds studied in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, soil sampled within one inch of the edge had copper concentrations about 20–68 ppm above soil near untreated beds after four growing seasons. Oregon State University Extension says even the highest measured levels were within the natural range of Willamette Valley soils. That finding applies to the tested beds, soil, and region; it does not establish results for other preservatives, products, or locations. Read the Oregon State University Extension study summary.

Size the bed around reach and access

Do not plan to walk on the planting soil: repeated foot traffic compacts it. Set the width so you can reach the center from an accessible edge. Minnesota Extension gives guidance of up to 2.5 feet for a bed accessed from one side and up to five feet when both sides are accessible. These are guidelines, not universal standards; your reach and the bed’s placement matter.

For wheelchair users, the same guidance gives 27 inches as a generally comfortable bed width. Consider height and approach space as well as width, and check the exact product’s dimensions and usable planting area before buying. A product’s advertised exterior size is not necessarily its interior growing area.

Account for depth, drainage, and watering

Raised beds behave like containers: their soil can dry faster than surrounding garden soil, and taller containers may need more frequent watering. Make sure the chosen location has water access, and consider how often you can check moisture during warm or dry weather.

If the bed will sit on native soil, a barrier underneath is usually unnecessary and may restrict root growth. On a patio or other hard surface, a permeable liner can help contain soil while allowing drainage. Hardware cloth under a bed can help deter burrowing animals.

Fill it with a suitable growing mix

Do not fill a raised bed with potting soil alone. Minnesota Extension recommends roughly one-half to two-thirds topsoil and one-third to one-half plant-based compost, adjusted for the texture of the topsoil. Too much compost can create water-retention problems. The right blend depends on the soil available and how it drains, so treat those proportions as a starting point rather than a fixed recipe.

Build or buy with the load in mind

Soil exerts pressure on the bed walls, especially when wet. Minnesota Extension recommends shorter boards because they are less likely to warp or break. Beds longer than six feet may need support, depending on construction and load. If buying a kit, check the assembly instructions, reinforcement requirements, drainage provisions, and the configuration-specific dimensions and capacity.

One manufacturer-listed example is Birdies’ Large Modular Steel Raised Garden Bed, offered in configurations with stated dimensions and capacity. Its specifications describe that product, not a comparative ranking or a recommendation for every garden. Check the manufacturer’s product details and confirm the selected configuration before relying on its measurements.
