The Coast Runner CR-1 is a compact desktop CNC mill with a 3.5 × 9.5 × 3.1-inch work volume and a current listed full-purchase price of $3,000. Its manufacturer says it can machine materials from wood and plastics through steel and titanium, but that is a capability claim, not an independently verified range. A 2024 hands-on review successfully cut a steel turner’s cube and praised its finish, while noting workholding challenges and software issues observed during testing in fall 2023.
What the Coast Runner CR-1 is—and what fits on it
The CR-1 is a small, horizontal-layout CNC mill intended for a bench or compact shop rather than large workpieces. Coast Runner lists overall dimensions of 270 × 425 × 380 mm (10.6 × 16.7 × 15 inches), a weight of 42 lb (19 kg), and a work volume of 89 × 242 × 79 mm (3.5 × 9.5 × 3.1 inches). These are manufacturer specifications on the CR-1 product page.
The work-volume figures describe the available machining envelope, not the size of stock that can automatically be clamped or machined in every orientation. Long or thin pieces may need a carefully planned fixture, and the horizontal arrangement can make workholding less straightforward. In Make’s hands-on review, Caleb Kraft specifically noted that securing larger, thin workpieces could require extra thought. The open bottom made chip cleanup easy in his experience.
Materials and cutting claims
Coast Runner lists wood, Delrin, aluminum, brass, stainless and tool steels, and titanium as materials the CR-1 can machine. The product page also claims 0.001-inch precision and simultaneous three-axis movement. These are manufacturer statements; the sources available do not establish independent precision testing across materials or confirm that every listed material is equally practical for every job.

Make’s review offers a narrower, concrete independent data point: Kraft machined a steel turner’s cube and reported a good surface finish on that project. This supports the possibility of steel work in at least that reviewed setup, but it is not a comprehensive test of the machine’s performance across steel types, part sizes, or production workloads. The review was published in 2024 and says testing took place in fall 2023.
Hardware, setup and controls
The CR-1 has several documented features intended to support setup and machining. Its November 2024 operator manual describes automatic table leveling, electronic part probing, a custom low-runout spindle with a closed-loop VFD controller, precision optical limit switches, and low-backlash precision linear ballscrews. Consult the operator manual for owner information, and verify that you have the current manual before following version-specific procedures.
Make’s 2024 review describes a spindle range of 1,500–8,000 RPM, self-calibration, and a built-in conductive probe. It also reports that the machine uses GRBL, with other control options available. These details reflect the reviewed machine and the review’s date, rather than a guarantee about current software releases or every configuration.
Kraft said setup was quick overall, with most of the setup time spent installing software. The same review found the software limited and reported bugs in navigating steps after an interruption. Because the hands-on testing was conducted in fall 2023, those observations should not be treated as a verdict on current software. The manufacturer’s manual also cautions that, despite its improvements over other desktop CNC mills, the CR-1 is not a high-end CNC mill and has limitations.

Price, reservation and shipping
At the time of the current manufacturer listing, the CR-1 is offered for $3,000 when purchased in full or a $300 deposit to reserve an order. The product page lists the next shipping cycle as Q4 2026 and describes reserving first, then configuring order details such as material packages before delivery. Price and shipping schedules can change, so confirm both directly on the manufacturer’s current listing before placing an order.
Make listed a $2,500 price for its review-era machine in 2024, excluding tooling and extra material. That historical figure is not the current price. The review’s exclusion is also a reminder to budget for job materials and tooling separately; the available sources do not establish the supplied collet, compatible shank sizes, or a specific end-mill package. Verify tool and collet requirements with the manufacturer before buying cutters.
Who should consider the CR-1?
The CR-1 may suit a maker or small-shop operator who needs a compact machine, values probing and leveling features, and expects to work on parts that fit within its modest envelope. The steel cube reported by Make is useful evidence for a specific steel project, while the manufacturer’s broader material list should be treated as a claim rather than an across-the-board performance guarantee.
It is a less obvious fit if your work depends on large stock, uncomplicated clamping of thin or oversize parts, or a proven current software workflow. Before committing, map your actual part dimensions to the stated work volume, plan how each piece will be held, and confirm software, tooling, and delivery details for the configuration you intend to order.
