For a bedroom around 100–150 square feet, a 5,000 BTU/h window air conditioner is a sensible category to consider, provided it fits the window and electrical setup. Measure the room first, then account for sun, shade, ceiling height, and occupants; choosing a unit that is too large can leave a room cool but clammy.
What size air conditioner do I need for a small bedroom?
Multiply the room’s length by its width to find its area. A 10-by-12-foot bedroom is 120 square feet. ENERGY STAR’s sizing chart, which assumes an 8-foot ceiling, recommends 5,000 BTU/h for 100–150 square feet, 6,000 BTU/h for 150–250 square feet, and 7,000 BTU/h for 250–300 square feet. See ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner sizing guidance.
| Room area | ENERGY STAR chart recommendation |
|---|---|
| 100–150 sq ft | 5,000 BTU/h |
| 150–250 sq ft | 6,000 BTU/h |
| 250–300 sq ft | 7,000 BTU/h |
These are starting points, not a full heating-and-cooling load calculation. If your bedroom has a higher ceiling or unusual heat exposure, the simple chart may not account for the room’s needs.
Adjust for sun, shade, and occupants
ENERGY STAR advises reducing the recommended capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room and increasing it by 10% for a very sunny room. Its guidance also says to add 600 BTU/h for each regular occupant beyond two. Consider these adjustments alongside the chart rather than choosing capacity from floor area alone.

Why bigger is not automatically better
An oversized air conditioner can cool the room quickly but run in short cycles, leaving less time to remove moisture. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program says oversizing can raise purchase and energy costs and reduce humidity removal because of excessive on-off cycling. ENERGY STAR likewise warns that the room may feel damp or clammy if the unit cools it before removing enough moisture. Read FEMP’s room air conditioner buyer guidance.
What is the best small window AC for a bedroom?
There is no supported universal winner here: the available manufacturer specifications are not a comparable independent test of cooling, noise, efficiency, or installation. Treat the following as examples to investigate for a room near the 5,000 BTU/h size range, not as a ranking. Confirm the model number and current specifications before buying.

| Example | Capacity and stated room coverage | Manufacturer-listed noise | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midea 5,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner | 5,000 BTU; manufacturer says up to 150 sq ft | 57 dB; the cited page does not establish comparable test conditions | The page’s model identifier is MAW05M1BWT. Confirm the identifier and current specifications on the Midea product page. |
| GE AHLC05CA mechanical window AC | Maximum 5,000 BTU; manufacturer lists small rooms up to 150 sq ft | 56/61 dBA at high fan/cool, respectively; this is not directly comparable to the Midea figure without matching test conditions and modes | Confirm current specifications on the GE product page. |
Noise figures are model-specific manufacturer claims, and the cited pages do not establish identical measurement conditions. A lower-looking number alone does not prove that one unit will sound quieter in your bedroom. Check the exact model’s stated rating and operating modes.

Room air conditioners in the federal purchasing guidance include window-mounted and through-the-wall equipment. Portable air conditioners are a separate category and are excluded from that specific FEMP guidance. Before choosing a unit, confirm the exact product’s installation method, window-opening dimensions, electrical requirements, and included sealing materials. Neither room-area guidance nor a product’s advertised coverage confirms that it fits your particular opening or circuit.

How should I compare efficiency and running cost?
Look at the current product label and ENERGY STAR certification for the exact model, then consider how often and under what conditions you expect to run it. FEMP recommends choosing a correctly sized room air conditioner and points shoppers to ENERGY STAR-qualified products. Its illustrative energy-savings example assumes a 12,000 BTU/h unit operating 750 hours per year; it is not a bill estimate for a small bedroom.
For a practical comparison, check the same information for each candidate: capacity, current efficiency label, installation fit, airflow direction and controls, noise rating with its stated mode, and voltage or circuit requirements. If a listing omits a detail you need, consult the manufacturer’s current specifications rather than inferring it from another model in the same product family.
