The best range hood for an induction cooktop is one sized to cover the cooking surface, suited to your cooking habits, and installed with a duct route that can deliver its stated airflow. Induction generally produces less heat than high-output gas, but frying, searing, and other high-heat cooking still create airborne grease and moisture. There is no single CFM number that fits every induction kitchen.
How to choose a range hood for an induction cooktop
Compare the hood’s coverage, installed airflow, capture efficiency, sound, duct route, and exhaust configuration—not just its maximum blower CFM. A high headline number may not translate to useful airflow if the duct is undersized or restrictive, and a hood that is too loud to use is a poor fit in practice.
- Coverage: Choose a hood at least as wide as the cooktop, and follow the selected model’s installation instructions for mounting height.
- Airflow: Consider how often you fry, sear, use a wok, or cook on several elements at once. These habits can call for stronger capture than light cooking.
- Capture: Look for a capture-efficiency figure and its test basis where available; airflow and capture efficiency describe different performance characteristics.
- Sound: Compare sound ratings at the fan speed and airflow you expect to use, rather than treating a single sone figure as a universal measure.
- Installation: Check duct diameter, length, elbows, termination, and whether the hood will exhaust outdoors or recirculate air.
How much CFM do you need for a range hood?
Induction is electric cooking and generally calls for less ventilation than a high-output gas range, according to Broan-NuTone’s hood-style guidance. But cooktop type alone cannot determine a useful CFM target: cooking intensity, hood geometry, and the installed duct system also matter. The reviewed sources do not establish one induction-specific CFM recommendation for all kitchens.
Broan’s CFM guide advises focusing on ducted or operating CFM, not only maximum blower CFM, because duct size, length, elbows, and installation quality can reduce actual airflow. A long or restrictive route can make a nominally powerful hood less effective and noisier.

EPA’s voluntary Indoor airPLUS Version 2 program, dated July 2024, sets kitchen exhaust criteria of at least 200 CFM for its Certified tier and at least 300 CFM for Gold, with rates measured by a verifier. Those are program thresholds, not universal household recommendations or substitutes for local code. The document also discusses sound and capture-efficiency criteria in its program context; they should not be read as blanket requirements for every home.
Choose hood width, style, and mounting height
Start with the cooktop’s width and the physical constraints of the kitchen. Broan says a hood should generally be at least as wide as the cooktop. Its guide describes typical mounting-height ranges by hood style, but the exact clearance varies by model; use that hood’s installation guide rather than applying a generic dimension.
Match the hood style to the kitchen
Under-cabinet, wall-mounted, island, and insert hoods have different mounting and capture geometries. Check whether the unit can be installed over your cooktop, whether cabinetry or ceiling framing allows the required duct route, and whether the hood extends far enough over the cooking area. A design that barely covers the surface may be less suitable for vigorous cooking, even if its blower has a high maximum rating.

Set the height from the model manual
Broan’s FAQ offers a general 24–30-inch cooktop-to-hood clearance recommendation, while emphasizing that models vary. Treat that range as general manufacturer guidance, not a universal installation rule: the selected hood’s instructions and applicable local requirements control.
Evaluate airflow, capture efficiency, and noise together
Airflow indicates how much air a fan can move under stated conditions. Capture efficiency indicates how much of the cooking plume the hood captures. A hood can have substantial airflow without a capture figure that tells you how effectively its geometry captures emissions. When available, compare capture data measured using the same test method.
EPA’s Indoor airPLUS Version 2 advisory A4.8a (July 2024) recommends at least 70% capture efficiency for range hoods and microwave-range hoods when tested to ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method. This is an advisory in a voluntary program document, not a universal code requirement.

Sones are a perceived-loudness rating, but figures are meaningful only with their operating condition. Check which fan speed or airflow the rating describes. EPA’s program document specifies no more than 2 sones at one setting of at least 100 CFM for demand-controlled exhaust fans in its program, with stated exceptions; that program criterion does not establish how loud every range hood will be at its maximum setting.
Ducted or recirculating: decide where the air goes
Ducted hoods
A ducted hood exhausts air outdoors. Broan-NuTone states that range hoods must be vented using metal duct. Its guidance says to prefer smooth metal duct over flexible metal, avoid plastic duct and 4-inch dryer duct, and not reduce ductwork below the size specified for the hood. Confirm the model’s specified diameter and the route’s length and bends before choosing a unit; a qualified installer can assess whether the planned route is practical.

A recirculating or ductless hood returns filtered air to the room rather than exhausting it outdoors. It is a different ventilation arrangement, not an equivalent way to remove air from the kitchen. Check the manufacturer’s filter requirements, replacement part, and availability for the exact model. For example, Broan lists its Glacier BCDJ130WH as ductless-capable only with charcoal filters sold separately.

EPA’s Indoor airPLUS Version 2 includes a defined multifamily/electric-cooktop exception in its program criteria. That specific exception does not make recirculation interchangeable with outdoor exhaust in every home or jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for duct restrictions and makeup air
Duct routing affects both real airflow and sound. Follow the hood’s required duct size; avoid needless elbows and long runs where the design allows; and use smooth metal duct where practical. Filters, restrictive exterior caps, and poor installation can also reduce performance. A blower’s maximum CFM is not a guarantee of the airflow delivered after installation.
Makeup-air requirements depend on the hood, installation, and local rules. Broan discusses optional makeup-air dampers for certain duct sizes, while EPA program documents address makeup air in their own defined context. Neither establishes a universal trigger for every jurisdiction. Ask the local authority having jurisdiction and a qualified installer whether makeup air is required for your planned system.

A 30-inch example: Broan Glacier BCDJ130WH
For readers looking for a 30-inch range hood for an induction cooktop, the Broan Glacier BCDJ130WH is a documented under-cabinet example—not a universal best choice. Broan lists a maximum blower rating of 450 CFM, 0.5 sones at normal speed, HVI certification, 7-inch round ducting, and 98.5% capture efficiency. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent comparative test results.
The product page also lists ductless capability with charcoal filters sold separately and suggests GLA3304WW as a replacement model. Product availability and compatible parts can change, so verify the current model, filter fit, and installation instructions before purchase. Its specifications do not establish that the unit is the right hood for every induction kitchen.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before choosing a hood
- Measure the cooktop and shortlist hoods at least as wide as the cooking surface.
- Choose a style and mounting position that fit the cabinetry, ceiling, and manufacturer’s clearance instructions.
- Describe your cooking habits—especially frequent frying, searing, wok cooking, or heavy use of multiple elements—when assessing the airflow you need.
- Plan the duct route and confirm the hood’s required duct material and diameter, run length, bends, and outdoor termination.
- Compare operating performance using airflow, capture-efficiency test basis, and sound at relevant fan settings rather than maximum CFM alone.
- Select ducted or recirculating operation based on the available route and the performance trade-off; verify replacement filters if recirculating.
- Check local requirements, including whether makeup air is needed, with the local authority and a qualified installer.
