For an oil pan or timing cover, Permatex Ultra Black is a manufacturer-listed oil-resistant option; for a differential or transfer case, use a gear-oil-specific formula such as Permatex Gear Oil RTV. These are application examples from Permatex, not independent test rankings or fitment approvals.
How to choose an automotive gasket maker
Start with the service procedure for the exact engine or component. It determines whether the joint needs RTV, a formed gasket, or RTV only at specified points. A general product listing cannot establish that silicone is suitable for every vehicle or joint.
- Fluid: Match the product to engine oil, gear oil, or automatic transmission fluid. Specialty formulations exist because fluid additives can affect ordinary RTV.
- Heat: Check the product’s stated temperature application and whether its rating is continuous or intermittent.
- Joint conditions: Consider movement, vibration, and clamping requirements; a product listing may identify intended high-torque or high-vibration applications.
- Directions and exclusions: Follow the exact product instructions, and check whether the manufacturer rules out the fluid or component involved.
Color is not a compatibility specification: use the named product’s directions and the service information, not color alone. More sealant is not a substitute for the specified bead or sealing method.

How to apply RTV and allow it to cure
For Ultra Black, Permatex’s directions call for clean, dry surfaces, a continuous bead that surrounds bolt holes, and assembly while the silicone is wet. The listed bead width is 1/16–1/4 inch. Permatex says the product dries in about one hour and fully cures in 24 hours; allow longer in cold or very dry conditions. Follow the instructions supplied with the exact product you use rather than transferring these directions to another formula.

The cited Permatex listings for these RTV products say they are not recommended for head gaskets or parts in contact with gasoline. Confirm the exclusion on the particular product page and follow vehicle service guidance; do not infer suitability for an unlisted application from a product’s color or general description.
