Shape and cure the patch according to that product’s instructions. A basic surface patch is not the right fix for a deep void, exposed reinforcement, movement, or continuing water entry.
Check that a surface patch is appropriate
This method is for a small hole or shallow defect in a sound concrete or masonry wall. There is no universal hole-size cutoff that makes a repair safe to treat as a DIY surface patch. If the damage is deep or extensive, the wall is moving, reinforcement is visible, or water keeps entering, get the condition assessed rather than covering it with mortar.
Identify whether the surface is concrete or masonry, and read the repair compound’s label for approved substrates, vertical-use instructions, and maximum application thickness. A product intended for a floor may not be suitable for a wall.
Choose a wall-rated repair material
Use a cement-based repair mortar or quick-setting cement specifically labeled for vertical concrete or masonry repairs. QUIKRETE lists FastSet Repair Mortar and Quick-Setting Cement for vertical and overhead applications; its Zip & Mix Repair Mortar instructions also cover concrete and masonry walls (QUIKRETE Zip & Mix instructions; QUIKRETE FAQ). These are examples, not endorsements of a particular product’s current availability or price.
#1 Best Overall
- REPAIRS CRACKS AND BREAKS IN CONCRETE: Premixed formula makes repairs easy
- DRIES A LIGHT TO MEDIUM GRAY COLOR: Ideal for lighter shades of concrete
- WON'T SHRINK OR CRACK: Provides maximum flexibility for a permanent repair
- INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR USE: Can be used inside or outside
- WATER CLEAN UP: Cleans up easily with soap and water. Made in the USA
Before buying, compare the label’s substrate and orientation, depth or thickness limits, working time, and moisture-preparation directions. For example, Rust-Oleum’s RockSolid Crack & Patch specifies use on horizontal, vertical, or overhead concrete up to 1/2 inch; that limit applies to that product alone (Rust-Oleum RockSolid Crack & Patch). Do not apply a floor-only epoxy product to a wall unless its instructions explicitly allow it.
Tools and protection
- Hammer and chisel or another suitable masonry tool for removing unsound material
- Bristle brush for clearing loose debris
- Trowel or the application tool specified on the product label
- Waterproof gloves and safety glasses
QUIKRETE lists a hammer and chisel or masonry grinding disk and portable drill, a bristle brush, waterproof gloves, and safety glasses in its repair instructions. Follow the safety directions for the specific compound and tools you use.

- A BREEZE TO USE — Minimal prep is required, since it comes premixed. Just use a putty or trowel to spread where repairs are needed. It takes only a few hours to set and about a day for a full cure
Patch the hole step by step
- Remove loose edges. Use a hammer and chisel or suitable masonry tool to remove flaking or defective concrete until the repair area is sound. Brush away dust and debris; remove oil or grease. Successful patching depends on removing defective concrete and bonding to a sound surface, as described in the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Guide to Concrete Repair.
- Prepare the cavity for the selected product. Dampen the area if the product instructions require it. Do not leave standing water where the label prohibits it. Preparation requirements vary, so follow the compound’s own directions rather than assuming every repair material needs the same surface condition.
- Mix only what you can use in time. Measure and mix exactly as directed. Some products set quickly: QUIKRETE says Quick-Setting Cement sets in about 10 minutes, so mix only an amount you can place within its working time. That timing applies to this named product, not to repair mortars generally.
- Pack the material firmly into the hole. Press the first layer against the cavity with firm trowel pressure to make contact with the prepared sides and back. Build up the repair in layers if needed, observing the selected product’s thickness limit. The Bureau of Reclamation guide discusses layered mortar placement for repairs deeper than 1 inch; this is not a substitute for a product’s own limits.
- Shape the surface. Slightly overfill only if the product’s method calls for it, then trim and finish the patch at the stage specified in its directions. QUIKRETE’s Zip & Mix instructions say to shape the repair once it becomes thumb-print hard.
- Protect and cure it. Follow the selected material’s curing and protection directions. Thorough curing matters for Portland-cement mortar, but there is no single cure time that applies to every patch compound.
Prevent weak or poor-looking patches
- Do not patch over loose or defective material; it can undermine the bond.
- Do not guess at the mix or add extra water. Measure and mix as the label specifies.
- Prepare moisture conditions as directed. A dry substrate can draw water from cement repair material, but standing water may also be prohibited.
- Do not add water to the exposed finished patch unless the product instructions require it. QUIKRETE’s concrete repair guidance warns that surface-added water can weaken or discolor the finish and contribute to shrinkage cracking (QUIKRETE concrete repair instructions).
- Do not use a patch compound beyond its stated depth or thickness limit, even if it is described as suitable for walls.
What to do if water is entering
An ordinary repair mortar is not the default answer to active water intrusion. QUIKRETE recommends its Hydraulic Water-Stop Cement for stopping active leaks in cracks over 1/4 inch wide; that is a product-specific recommendation for that situation, not a general instruction to use it for every leaking hole (QUIKRETE FAQ). Persistent water entry needs attention to the source as well as the surface opening.
