For a small, shallow hole or spall in otherwise sound concrete, remove loose material, clean and prepare the cavity, then fill it with a concrete repair mortar rated for the repair’s depth and position. The key is not to cover unsound concrete or ignore why it failed: damage that is deep, recurring, spreading, exposes reinforcing steel, or may affect a load-bearing element needs assessment and a repair method suited to the condition.
First decide whether a basic patch is suitable
A hand-applied patch is generally suited to a small, shallow area of missing or deteriorated surface concrete when the surrounding concrete is sound. A hole is not automatically a cosmetic problem: the cause may still be damaging the surrounding material, and a patch over loose or delaminated concrete is unlikely to provide a reliable repair.
- Potentially suitable for a basic patch: a shallow chip or spall with sound concrete around and beneath it, no exposed reinforcement, and no sign that the damage is spreading.
- Get the condition assessed: a deep or broad cavity, widespread or recurring deterioration, exposed or corroded reinforcing steel, or damage near a load-bearing element.
- Treat cracks separately: a crack without material loss is a different repair problem. Depending on its condition, methods can include epoxy injection, routing and sealing, gravity filling, or grouting; simply covering it with patch mortar is not a universal crack repair.
Before repair, look for a continuing cause. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) identifies reinforcement corrosion, freeze-thaw deterioration in saturated concrete, alkali-aggregate reaction, and chemical attack among possible causes. Its guidance calls for determining the root cause through a condition survey before beginning repair. A patch alone will not resolve an active cause. ACI RAP-6; ACI PRC-546-23
Choose the repair approach and mortar
For a small, shallow spall, a cement-based concrete repair mortar applied by hand is a recognized option. Select a product whose instructions cover the cavity’s depth and the surface orientation. Product labels and technical sheets govern mixing, preparation, bonding, placement, temperature limits, and curing; there is no universal water ratio, working time, or cure duration for all repair mortars.

- FOR EASY REPAIRS — It's the ideal concrete patch repair mix, neatly fixing cracks and spalls so your property looks like new. It's even textured for a more seamless blend with the existing structure
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to avoid shrinking or cracking, the ready-to-use premixed cement patch offers good adhesion and high strength so your slabs, walls & walkways/sidewalks perform as good as ever
- EASY CLEANUP — Sika concrete patch is acrylic-based, so once application is done, it cleans up using only water. No need for special cleaners and chemicals
- GREEN — It follows regulations concerning the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC), helping to keep the air we breathe cleaner and fresher
- A BREEZE TO USE — Minimal prep is required, since it comes premixed. Just use a putty or trowel to spread where repairs are needed. It takes only a few hours to set and about a day for a full cure
- Horizontal surface: follow a repair sequence suited to slab spalls, including evaluation, removal, edge preparation, mixing, bonding where specified, placement, and curing. Broad delamination is not just a skim-coat job. ACI RAP-7
- Vertical or overhead surface: choose a mortar intended to resist sagging in that position and place it carefully. ACI reports vertical placement thicknesses ranging from 1/8 to 4 inches (3 to 100 mm), depending on material and repair geometry. That technical range is not a recommendation for any particular product; follow the selected product’s allowed thickness. Deeper placements may require multiple lifts and care to maintain bond between layers. ACI RAP-6
- Deep or larger repair: a hand patch may not be appropriate. Depending on the condition and repair design, form-and-pour, form-and-pump, or spray-applied methods may fit better. ACI RAP-6
Check whether the manufacturer calls for a bonding agent, a particular substrate moisture condition, or placement in multiple lifts. Material selection depends on the repair’s depth and exposure as well as its orientation. ACI PRC-546.3-23
How to patch a small, shallow hole
- Inspect the area and identify the likely cause. Confirm that the damage is shallow and that the surrounding concrete is sound. If it is recurring, spreading, deep, or associated with exposed steel or a potentially structural crack, stop and arrange an assessment rather than treating it as a simple surface patch.
- Remove unsound concrete. Take away loose or delaminated material until the remaining substrate is sound. Prepare the cavity edges and surface as required for the chosen repair mortar; do not use new material to conceal concrete that is still loose.
- Clean and prepare the cavity. Remove debris and follow the product’s instructions for surface cleanliness and moisture condition. Use a bonding agent or dampen the concrete only if the product instructions call for it.
- Mix the repair mortar as directed. Use the specified proportions and mixing method. Do not assume a water amount, working time, or temperature range based on another product.
- Place and finish the mortar. Work it into the prepared cavity and consolidate it as the product directs. Use a suitable finishing trowel or float to bring the surface level with the surrounding concrete, while respecting the product’s depth and orientation limits.
- Cure and protect the repair. Follow the product’s curing and temperature instructions and protect the repair as directed. Cure times vary by material and site conditions; no single duration applies to every packaged repair mortar.
A separate dry-pack technique described by the Portland Cement Association uses bonding grout and dry-pack grout tamped in 3/8–1/2-inch layers, with moist curing for 3–7 days. Those details apply to that specific method, not to packaged patch mortars generally. Portland Cement Association, EB111

When to use a different repair method
Broad horizontal spalling or delamination calls for assessment and a planned slab-repair sequence, not a cosmetic surface cover. Deeper repairs may require forming, pumping, or spraying material, and damage involving corrosion or structural concerns needs the underlying condition addressed. ACI’s general repair guide covers assessment, preparation, materials, and repair techniques; its crack guide describes methods selected according to crack condition. ACI PRC-546-23; ACI PRC-224.1-07
