To patch an outlet hole in drywall, use a pre-cut receptacle patch made for the box opening, apply drywall compound to its back, center it over the damaged area, and smooth it flat with a joint knife. This repairs the drywall surface; it does not establish whether the electrical box, receptacle, or wiring is safe or code-compliant.
Choose a patch that fits the repair
For a mis-cut or damaged drywall edge around a standard receptacle box, USG’s Strait-Flex Outlet Patch is the directly matched option. USG describes it as a pre-cut patch designed to fit around standard electrical receptacle boxes and repair or reinforce damaged areas. USG also offers Strait-Flex Perma-Patch, a multipurpose patch with receptacle patterns that can be trimmed. It may suit a repair that needs a more adaptable shape, such as a relocated receptacle opening. The dedicated Outlet Patch is the more direct fit for a standard box opening; the manufacturer information does not establish that either option is stronger, faster, cheaper, or more durable. What you’ll need
- A drywall outlet patch sized and shaped for the repair
- Drywall compound
- A joint knife
- Sandpaper and primer for finishing

Apply a pre-cut outlet patch
- Prepare the drywall surface. Lightly sand the repair area, as directed in USG’s product data sheet.
- Apply compound to the patch. Spread drywall compound about 1/8 inch thick on the back of the patch.
- Center the patch. Position it over the damaged area around the receptacle box.
- Smooth it flat. Use a joint knife to wipe the patch flat to the wall, following the manufacturer’s directions.
USG specifies that the building be maintained at a minimum of 55 °F (13 °C) during and after installation. Its data sheet also cautions against solvents or solvent-based paints that could degrade the adhesive. Check the current package instructions before applying the product, since directions may change. Let the compound dry, then finish the wall
Wait for the compound to dry before adding another coat. Apply more compound as needed to blend the patch into the surrounding wall, then sand and prime the repaired surface. USG’s Sheetrock Patch and Repair Pack guidance gives a medium-hole method using compound around the perimeter and two or three crossed strips of paper joint tape embedded in compound. - To use this product effectively, first clean and dry out the hole you want to patch before peeling back the backing and applying the drywall patch. Evenly spread out plaster with a scraper afterwards for a more seamless look.
For that repair-pack product, USG specifies a minimum working temperature of 55 °F (13 °C) and approximately 24 hours between applications at 75 °F and 50% relative humidity. Drying time varies with conditions and the compound used, so follow the instructions for your selected materials.
