A clean microfiber cloth made for glass is a reliable starting point for cleaning windows. Waffle-weave and low-pile cloths with diamond ridges are both available, but the product information here does not establish that one construction is always better. For a straightforward routine, use a damp cloth to clean and a separate dry cloth to polish, following the instructions for the cloth you choose.
What to look for in a window-cleaning cloth
- Made for glass: Choose a cloth intended for windows, mirrors, or glass. Keep it clean; dirt or residue on a cloth can transfer to the pane.
- Waffle weave or low pile: Both constructions are used in glass cloths. The available manufacturer descriptions are not independent evidence that one weave cleans better.
- A manageable size: Several examples below are 16 × 16 inches, a size that can be folded to expose fresh working areas.
- Care instructions you can follow: Washing and drying requirements vary by product, so check the label or manufacturer’s guidance.
Thickness and fiber composition are product specifications, not proof of cleaning performance. No independent controlled comparison establishing a best cloth was identified.

These descriptions and numbers come from manufacturer or catalog information; they do not show that higher GSM, a particular fiber blend, or a particular weave produces a better result.
A practical two-cloth method
E-Cloth publishes a two-step routine for its Window Cleaning Pack. It is a manufacturer’s method for that product, not a result from an independent comparison.

- Wet and wring the cleaning cloth. Dampen the waffle-weave Window Cloth and gently wring out excess water.
- Clean the pane in sections. Wipe the glass, working across the surface rather than leaving areas to dry unpredictably.
- Fold the polishing cloth. Fold the smooth cloth so several clean, dry areas are available as you work.
- Polish edge to edge. Immediately follow the damp pass with the dry cloth, turning to a fresh section as needed.
Other products recommend a single slightly damp cloth. StreakFree, for example, says to wet its cloth, wring out excess water, and use it slightly damp. Follow the directions for your specific cloth rather than assuming every microfiber product uses the same method.
Conditions that can affect the finish
- Use clean cloths: A cloth with dirt or leftover cleaning-product residue can transfer it back onto glass.
- Avoid hot glass and direct sun: GYEON recommends working on cool, dry glass out of direct sunlight.
- Use an appropriate amount of cleaner: GYEON advises against using more glass cleaner than needed.
- Rotate to a clean area: Folding the cloth gives you fresh sections and helps avoid spreading collected moisture or residue.
Washing and storing microfiber glass cloths
Care instructions are not universal. For its Original Glass Cleaning Cloth, StreakFree recommends machine washing warm or cold with mild detergent, avoiding bleach and fabric softener, and air drying or tumble drying on low. Check the instructions supplied with your cloth before washing; unsuitable laundry products or care methods may affect its intended use.
