For most shower doors, windows, mirrors, and glass tabletops, that means using mild dish soap first for oils and residue, then vinegar or a glass-safe acidic cleaner for hard-water minerals, followed by a microfiber dry buff. Where water hits glass every day, a Squeegee and a water-repellent coating will keep the glass clear longer than any one-time deep clean.
On our job sites, cloudy glass usually falls into one of four buckets: mineral scale, soap and body-oil film, cleaner residue, or real surface damage. The first three can usually be cleaned. The fourth cannot be fixed with a spray bottle. That distinction matters because homeowners often spend $40 on products and two hours scrubbing glass that has already been etched or scratched.
This guide covers the practical method we recommend for shower doors, mirrors, windows, and glass furniture, including what to buy, what to avoid, how often to clean, what it costs in 2026, and when it is time to call a glass restoration pro or replace the panel.
Start by Identifying What Is Making the Glass Cloudy
Clear glass is not cleaned the same way every time. Fingerprints, soap scum, and mineral stains respond to different chemistry. If you use the wrong product, you can polish the surface all day and still leave the actual problem behind.
Hard-Water Minerals
Hard-water spots form when water evaporates and leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on the glass. They look like white dots, gray haze, or a chalky film that gets worse near the bottom of shower doors, around window sprinklers, and along glass edges where water sits longest. Standard ammonia-style glass cleaners may make the glass smell clean, but they usually do not dissolve mineral scale well.
Soap and Body-Oil Film
Soap scum is different from mineral scale. It is a sticky layer made from soap, body oils, shampoo residue, and minerals in the water. It often feels slightly greasy under a wet fingertip. In showers, we like a two-step process: cut the oily film first with mild dish soap, rinse, then use vinegar or citric acid to break down the mineral layer.
Cleaner Residue
Cleaner residue shows up as streaks, rainbow smears, or a fog that moves around when you wipe it. This happens when too much product is used, when glass is cleaned in direct sun, or when the final wipe is done with tap water in a very hard-water home. A final pass with distilled water and a dry microfiber cloth usually fixes it.

Etching and Scratches
Etching is actual surface damage. It can be caused by long-term mineral exposure, harsh cleaners, abrasive pads, construction debris, or improper use of blades on tempered glass. If the glass looks cloudy even after a proper mineral-removal process, or if you can see fine scratches under angled light, cleaning will not fully restore it. At that point, polishing or replacement may be the realistic path.

The Supplies That Actually Help
You do not need a large cleaning kit. A good basic setup costs about $10 to $35 in 2026 and covers most routine glass cleaning. Heavier restoration products usually bring the DIY cost to about $20 to $60, depending on the hard-water remover, polishing pad, gloves, and whether a drill-mounted pad is used.
| Item | Best Use | Typical 2026 DIY Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Squeegee | Daily shower glass drying and window finishing | $5-$20 |
| Microfiber cloths | Wet cleaning, drying, and final buffing | $5-$15 |
| Mild dish soap | Body oils, fingerprints, and greasy film | $3-$6 |
| White vinegar or citric-acid cleaner | Light to moderate mineral deposits | $3-$12 |
| Glass-safe hard-water remover | Heavy shower or sprinkler stains | $10-$30 |
| Non-scratch white pad or soft sponge | Light agitation without gouging glass | $3-$10 |
| Distilled water | Final rinse in hard-water homes | $1-$3 per gallon |
| Hydrophobic coating | Reducing water spots after cleaning | $10-$40 |
Use rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection when working with acidic cleaners. Protect natural stone, wood trim, painted surfaces, and metal finishes with painter’s tape or plastic sheeting when needed. Vinegar and stronger acidic cleaners can etch marble, limestone, travertine, cement grout, and some metal finishes if they are left sitting.
Avoid steel wool, green abrasive pads, powdered cleansers, and magic erasers on coated glass unless the glass or coating manufacturer specifically allows them. These products can dull coatings or leave fine scratches that only show when sunlight hits the glass at an angle.
Best Way to Clean Glass Shower Doors
The best way to clean glass shower doors is to remove oils first, dissolve minerals second, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. Most failed shower-door cleaning attempts skip one of those steps.

Step 1: Wash Off Oils and Soap Film
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a quart of warm water. Wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth or soft sponge. Pay extra attention to the bottom 12 inches of the door, the handle area, the overlap between sliding panels, and the lower sweep. These areas collect body oil, shampoo, and standing water.
Rinse with clean water. If the glass still feels slick or greasy, repeat this step before moving to vinegar. Acidic cleaners work better when they are not fighting through a layer of oil.
Step 2: Dissolve Mineral Scale
For light to moderate hard-water spots, spray a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water on the glass. Let it dwell for 5 to 10 minutes. Do not let it dry on the surface. Scrub lightly with a non-scratch white pad or microfiber cloth, then rinse thoroughly.
For very hard water, use a citric-acid or lactic-acid cleaner labeled safe for glass. These products often work faster than household vinegar, but they also require more care around stone, grout, metal finishes, and coated surfaces. Follow the label dwell time exactly.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry the Edges
Rinse the glass completely. If your tap water leaves spots quickly, use distilled water for the final rinse or final wipe. Squeegee from top to bottom, then dry the lower edge, corners, hinges, sweep, and metal tracks with a microfiber cloth. The lower 2 to 4 inches of a shower door are where deposits usually rebuild first.
Step 4: Apply a Hydrophobic Treatment
Once the glass is fully clean and dry, apply a glass-safe hydrophobic coating or water-repellent treatment. Consumer sprays and wipe-on products usually cost about $10 to $40. They do not make glass maintenance-free, but they help water sheet off the surface and reduce spotting when paired with regular squeegeeing.
Do not apply a coating over mineral-stained or dirty glass. It traps the problem underneath and makes the next cleaning harder.
How to Keep Shower Glass Clear Longer
The longest-lasting habit is simple: squeegee after every shower. It takes 30 to 60 seconds and prevents most of the minerals from drying on the glass. Keep the squeegee inside the shower so it is part of the exit routine, not a chore you have to remember later.
Recommended Free Tools
For a hard-water home, use this maintenance schedule:
- After every shower: Squeegee the glass and dry the bottom edge, sweep, and tracks.
- Once per week: Spray 1:1 vinegar and water or a glass-safe acidic cleaner, allow 5 to 10 minutes of dwell time, rinse, and dry.
- Once per month: Clean the seals, lower track, hinge area, and door overlap with mild soap, then inspect for mineral buildup and mildew.
- Every 3 to 6 months: Refresh consumer water-repellent coating if water no longer beads or sheets off well.
Ventilation is part of glass care. Run the bath fan during the shower and for at least 20 minutes afterward. If the mirror stays fogged for a long time or the shower enclosure remains wet after an hour, humidity is helping soap film and mildew rebuild around frames and caulk. In that case, cleaning harder is not the real fix. Better ventilation is.
How to Clean Windows Without Streaks
For windows, timing matters. Clean exterior glass on an overcast day or when the glass is cool. Direct sun dries cleaner too quickly and leaves streaks before you can squeegee the surface.
Start by removing loose grit with a soft brush, microfiber cloth, or gentle rinse. This is especially important after remodeling, stucco work, masonry work, drywall sanding, or landscaping. Silica dust, mortar, grout, and stucco particles can scratch glass if you drag them across the surface with a wet rag.
Use mild dish soap in water for general soil. Squeegee from top to bottom, wiping the blade after each pass. Detail the edges with a dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn sprinkler spots, use vinegar or a glass-safe hard-water remover, but test in a small area first and keep acidic cleaner off painted trim, stone sills, and metal finishes.

If hard-water spots return within a day or two on exterior windows, check the sprinklers. Repeated overspray is one of the fastest ways to damage exterior glass. Adjust heads so they do not hit windows, doors, or glass railings. In hot weather, sprinkler water can evaporate in minutes and leave a mineral pattern that becomes harder to remove every week.
How to Clean Mirrors and Glass Tabletops
Mirrors need less water than shower glass. Too much liquid can run behind the mirror edge and damage the backing over time. Spray cleaner onto the cloth instead of directly onto the mirror, especially near the bottom edge.
For mirrors, use a lightly damp microfiber cloth with distilled water or a small amount of glass cleaner, then buff dry with a second cloth. If the mirror has hairspray, toothpaste, or oily fingerprints, use a drop of dish soap in warm water first, then rinse with a barely damp cloth and dry.
For glass tabletops, remove crumbs, grit, and construction dust before wet wiping. Use mild dish soap for fingerprints and food oils. Avoid setting abrasive pads, powdered cleansers, or metal tools directly on the glass. If the tabletop has a coating, tint, painted underside, or decorative edge, test any cleaner in a small area first.
When Cleaning Will Not Fix Cloudy Glass
Not all cloudy glass is dirty. Sometimes the surface or assembly has failed. This is the section most cleaning advice skips, but it is where homeowners save real time and money.
Etched Glass
Etching is permanent surface damage. It can look like hard-water haze, but it will not disappear after mineral removal. Light etching may be improved with professional polishing. Severe etching usually means replacement is more cost-effective.
Scratched Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is common in shower doors, patio doors, and many code-required locations. It is strong, but it can still scratch. Be cautious with razor blades. Some tempered panes have fabrication debris or surface conditions that can scratch when a blade is used. Unless the manufacturer or a glass professional confirms it is safe, use a plastic scraper and non-scratch pads instead.
Failed Insulated Glass Seals
If a double-pane window looks foggy between the panes, exterior cleaning will not fix it. The insulated glass unit has likely lost its seal. You may see moisture, mineral haze, or staining inside the airspace. The repair is usually glass unit replacement, not cleaning.
Damaged Coatings
Some shower glass, mirrors, and energy-efficient windows have factory coatings. Abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or improper restoration compounds can damage them. If the glass has a manufacturer-applied easy-clean coating, low-E coating, tint, or film, check compatibility before using acidic products or polishing compounds.

Cracked or Non-Safety Glass
Cleaning is not the answer for cracked glass or glass that does not meet safety requirements in a hazardous location. Shower doors, tub enclosures, glass near doors, some low windows, stair areas, and other impact-prone locations may require safety glazing such as tempered or laminated glass under residential building codes. If you are replacing glass in one of these locations, ask the glass contractor or local building department whether safety glazing and a permit apply.

| Heavy hard-water shower buildup | DIY if mild; pro if severe or coated | $20-$60 DIY; pro pricing varies by severity and polishing time |
| Standard residential window cleaning | DIY for safe, reachable windows; pro for full home | About $150-$450 per home, commonly around $220-$266 nationally |
| Per-window professional cleaning | Pro | Often about $4-$15 per window depending on panes, height, access, screens, tracks, and soil |
| Fog between double panes | Replacement, not cleaning | Varies by glass size, type, labor, and access |
| Cracked shower door or non-code glass | Glass contractor | Driven by tempered or laminated glass, thickness, hardware, and custom sizing |
Professional hard-water stain removal on shower glass is usually priced as specialty restoration, not routine cleaning. The cost depends on square footage, mineral severity, access, whether polishing is needed, and the risk of scratching coated or tempered glass. If the quote approaches replacement cost, ask the contractor to explain the expected result before approving the work.
Safety and Surface Compatibility Notes
Never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaners. That can create hazardous fumes. Use one cleaner at a time, rinse thoroughly, and ventilate the room.
Acidic cleaners are useful on mineral deposits, but they can damage nearby materials. Protect marble, limestone, travertine, cement grout, unsealed concrete, metal finishes, wood trim, and painted surfaces. Rinse overspray quickly. If the shower has natural stone walls or floors, do not spray vinegar freely around the enclosure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor post-remodel glass, remove dry dust gently before adding water. Construction dust can include silica, grout, mortar, stucco, drywall compound, and metal particles. A wet rag can turn that debris into sandpaper. On our projects, we treat new glass like a finished surface: dust first, rinse or wipe lightly, then clean with microfiber and glass-safe products.
For ladders and exterior glass, do not stretch across windows to save a few minutes. If you cannot keep three points of contact, reach the glass comfortably, and control the squeegee without leaning, hire a window cleaner. Falls cost far more than a service call.
A Simple Clear-Glass Routine That Works
For shower doors, the routine is daily drying, weekly mineral control, and occasional coating maintenance. Squeegee after every shower, dry the lower edge, clean weekly with vinegar or a glass-safe acidic cleaner, and refresh the hydrophobic coating when water stops shedding well.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to clean cloudy shower glass?
Wash first with mild dish soap to remove soap and body oils, rinse, then spray a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water or a glass-safe acidic cleaner. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, scrub lightly with microfiber or a non-scratch pad, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a squeegee and microfiber cloth.
Why do hard-water spots keep coming back on glass?
Hard-water spots return when water is allowed to dry on the glass. The water evaporates and leaves calcium and magnesium behind. In showers, squeegee after every use and run the bath fan. On exterior windows, adjust sprinklers so they do not spray the glass.
Can vinegar damage glass or bathroom surfaces?
Vinegar generally does not damage plain glass when used correctly, but it can harm marble, limestone, travertine, cement grout, some metal finishes, and certain coatings. Protect nearby surfaces, do not let vinegar dry in place, and rinse thoroughly.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Are hard-water stains permanent?
Mineral deposits are often removable, especially when treated early with vinegar, citric acid, or a glass-safe hard-water remover. Long-term deposits can etch the glass surface. Etching is permanent damage and may require professional polishing or replacement.
Do hydrophobic glass coatings really work?
Yes, but they are not maintenance-free. A hydrophobic coating helps water bead or sheet off glass, which reduces spotting. It works best when applied to fully clean glass and maintained with non-abrasive cleaners and regular squeegeeing.
Do I need safety glass when replacing a shower door or window?
Often, yes. Shower doors, tub enclosures, glass near doors, low windows, stairs, and other hazardous locations may require tempered or laminated safety glazing under residential codes. Confirm requirements with your glass contractor or local building department before replacement.
