For many big-family kitchens, an 8-quart electric pressure cooker is a sensible size to consider. Instant Pot describes its Duo Plus 8QT and Pro 8QT as suitable for up to eight servings, but that is a manufacturer estimate—not a promise that every recipe will feed eight people. Choose by usable capacity, controls, pot design, safety features and storage fit rather than treating a larger number of programs as proof of better cooking.
What size electric pressure cooker works for a big family?
An 8-quart cooker offers more nominal capacity than smaller models, which can help with family meals, batch cooking and gatherings. Instant Pot says the Duo Plus 8QT and Pro 8QT are suitable for up to eight servings; Instant Pot UK describes its Duo 8L as suitable for up to eight people. These are manufacturer descriptions, not guaranteed diner counts. The number of portions you can make depends on the recipe, appetites and the cooker’s safe fill limit.
Quart and litre labels are different units, even when the stated capacities are close. Compare models using the unit on the product listing, and check the manual’s fill guidance: nominal pot capacity is not the same as the amount of food you can pressure-cook safely.

The available official specifications make the Duo Plus 8QT and Pro 8QT useful examples of features to compare. They do not establish which cooker performs better, and they are not independent test results.

Which features matter most when choosing?
Programs and controls
Count the cooking functions only after checking which ones you would actually use. The cited pages list nine functions for the Duo Plus 8QT and ten for the Pro 8QT, but a higher program count alone does not demonstrate easier operation or better results. Look at the product page and manual for the controls and display, and consider whether the settings match your cooking habits.
Pot handling and accessories
A full inner pot can be awkward to move. The Pro listing highlights easy-grip handles on its inner pot. The Duo Plus listing says the box includes a handled steam rack and two additional sealing rings. Confirm what is included with the exact model and regional package you plan to buy; accessories and replacement parts are not necessarily interchangeable across cooker variants.

Before choosing, check the exact model’s care instructions, warranty terms, dimensions and weight. Those details affect whether the cooker is practical to clean and store, but they are not fully established for both models in the cited specifications. Pressure-cooking safety: liquid and fill limits
Instant Pot UK’s pressure-cooking guidance says, “Always add liquid when Pressure cooking.” It gives 500 ml as the minimum liquid for an 8L cooker and says not to exceed the pressure-cooking maximum line marked PC Max – 2/3.
