For a conventional two-stage furnace, choose a thermostat that explicitly supports two heating stages. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a documented option: Google lists support for three conventional heat stages, including W1 and W2. That establishes stage capacity, not fit for every home. Check your system’s wiring, power needs, and any heat-pump, dual-fuel, or accessory equipment before buying.
What “two-stage” thermostat support means
A conventional two-stage furnace can call for first-stage heat and, when needed, second-stage heat. Manufacturer wiring guidance commonly identifies W or W1 as the first heating stage and W2 as the second. A compatible thermostat must be able to control both stages; support for one heating stage alone is not enough.
Stage capacity is only one part of compatibility. A thermostat may also need to accommodate your system’s power arrangement, cooling equipment, heat pump, dual-fuel setup, or accessories. Check the exact thermostat model and the entire HVAC system rather than relying on a product’s general label.
Thermostats with documented support for two-stage heat
| Thermostat | Documented conventional heating-stage support | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | Three stages (W1, W2, W3), according to Google’s compatibility information. | It has enough conventional heating-stage capacity for a two-stage furnace. Confirm full system and wiring compatibility; Google says a C wire or Nest Power Connector is needed in limited cases. |
| Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) | Two conventional heating stages, according to Google’s compatibility information. | Confirm the exact wiring fit and whether the model is available for your purchase. |
| Nest Thermostat | One heating stage and one cooling stage, plus a second stage of either heating or cooling, according to Google’s compatibility information. | Do not assume it supports two heating stages and two cooling stages at the same time. Check your system’s exact configuration. |
| ecobee thermostat family | ecobee identifies W1 and W2 as conventional first and second heat stages, and says its thermostats do not support a W3 three-stage furnace, in its wire-label guidance. | Verify the specific current model and whole-system wiring with ecobee’s compatibility guidance. Its PEK may power supported installations without a C wire, but it is not suitable for every configuration. |
These specifications establish documented stage capacity, not comparative performance. The available manufacturer material does not show that one of these thermostats will save more energy or deliver better comfort than another in a particular home.

How to check your furnace wiring
- Turn off HVAC power before opening equipment. Use the system’s appropriate shutoff and follow the equipment instructions. If you are not confident working safely around the wiring, stop and contact an HVAC professional.
- Read terminal labels, not wire colors. Honeywell Home’s wiring guide, last updated July 16, 2025, says there is no standard color for each wire function. The terminal labels at the thermostat—or, if needed, at the HVAC control board—are the useful identifiers.
- Look for the heating-stage terminals. In conventional heating, W or W1 commonly identifies stage one and W2 identifies stage two. Record which terminals are used; do not infer their function from insulation color.
- Identify the rest of the system. Note whether you also have cooling, a heat pump, dual fuel, humidification or dehumidification equipment, multiple fan speeds, or dual transformers. These details can change which thermostat and wiring arrangement are compatible.
- Compare your system with the exact thermostat’s compatibility guidance. Check all connected terminals and power requirements, not just whether the thermostat lists two heat stages.
Check power and special configurations
C-wire and other power requirements
Power compatibility differs by model and system. Google says the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is designed to work without a C wire, but a C wire or Nest Power Connector is necessary in limited cases. The standard Nest Thermostat requires a C wire or Nest Power Connector for some system types, including certain heat-pump systems. For ecobee, the Power Extender Kit (PEK) can provide power in supported installations without a C wire, but ecobee documents configuration restrictions. Follow the relevant manufacturer’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming an adapter will work in your system.
Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems
Heat-pump wiring can use labels such as Aux or Aux/W2. Those labels are not interchangeable with a conventional furnace’s W2 without considering how the full system is configured. If your home combines a heat pump with a furnace, it is a dual-fuel system; confirm that the thermostat supports the specific arrangement and controls the equipment correctly.

Honeywell Home advises pausing and contacting an HVAC professional if you have a dual-fuel system or are unsure about the wiring. Google’s installation guide for the model it covers also recommends professional installation for dual-fuel systems and whole-home humidifiers or dehumidifiers; that guidance should not be generalized to every Nest model.
Accessories and other terminals
Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, multiple fan speeds, and dual transformers can affect the wiring and compatibility check. A thermostat that supports two furnace stages may still lack the terminals or configuration support needed for other equipment. Match each connected function to the exact model’s installation documentation, and get professional help if the wiring or transformer arrangement is unclear.

What a thermostat upgrade can—and cannot—promise
Manufacturer documentation can establish whether a thermostat supports a given number of stages and describe its wiring requirements. It does not, by itself, establish household energy savings, payback, or a measured comfort improvement. Those outcomes depend on the home, equipment, settings, installation, and use; stage count alone is not evidence that one thermostat will outperform another.
Choose on verified compatibility first: two-stage heat support, correct handling of the rest of your HVAC system, and a workable power arrangement. Then weigh installation support and model availability. Current prices, stock, independent comparative testing, and home-specific results are not established here.
