No shower curtain is guaranteed to stay mildew-free. If you want a wipe-clean, PVC-free option, consider a PEVA liner; if you prefer fabric, choose a polyester curtain or liner whose care label you can follow. Either choice still needs to dry fully, be cleaned as directed, and be paired with good bathroom moisture control.
What “mildew-resistant” really means
The label is not a promise that visible growth will never appear. The available care guidance describes materials and maintenance, not immunity or independent tests proving that one curtain prevents mildew better than another. Moisture, drying, cleaning, and ventilation all matter.
PEVA or polyester: which should you choose?

For a product comparison, look at material, dimensions and fit, care-label instructions, how easily the curtain can dry, whether PVC-free materials matter to you, and whether your bathroom has functioning outdoor exhaust ventilation. There is no established performance winner among named products here.
How to care for a shower curtain
- Check the product’s care label. Follow its instructions rather than assuming a universal wash method or cleaning schedule.
- Clean according to the material and label. For PEVA, supplier guidance suggests cool water, mild detergent, or a soft cloth as gentler options; for polyester, it recommends label-directed machine or hand washing.
- Let it dry completely. Supplier guidance recommends fully air-drying PEVA and hanging polyester to dry unless its label allows otherwise.
- Use cleaners cautiously. Confirm that a cleaner is compatible with the curtain material and follow its label. The EPA says not to mix cleaning products. Do not apply a chemical treatment unless the curtain’s instructions permit it.
These are general supplier recommendations, not substitutes for the care instructions for a particular curtain. A specific product’s label takes precedence.

Control bathroom moisture, too
A curtain choice cannot replace moisture control. The CDC advises: “Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom that vent to outside your home.” CDC mold guidance also says to remove mold growth and address the moisture problem. The EPA recommends using a bathroom fan that vents outdoors, or opening a window when conditions allow. EPA’s guide to mold, moisture, and the home says to follow cleaning-product labels and never mix cleaning products.
Ventilation helps manage moisture generally; it does not replace cleaning, drying the curtain, or fixing a leak.

How to make the choice
- Choose PEVA if a PVC-free, wipe-clean liner is your priority and you are comfortable following its specific care instructions.
- Choose polyester if you prefer fabric and are willing to wash and dry it according to its label.
- For either material, check fit and care directions before buying, let the curtain dry fully, and consider whether the bathroom exhausts air outdoors.
