The best dual-fuel thermostat is one documented to work with your specific heat pump, gas or oil furnace, equipment stages, wiring, and power supply. There is no universal best model or switchover temperature: the right control and settings depend on the installed system and local operating costs. Because incorrect dual-fuel setup can damage equipment, have an HVAC professional verify compatibility and configure the system.
What is a dual-fuel thermostat?
A dual-fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas or oil furnace. The heat pump can provide heating and cooling; when conditions or the control strategy call for it, the furnace takes over heating. The thermostat and associated equipment controls coordinate that changeover. Google Nest Help, Goodman, and Trane describe these heat-pump-and-furnace arrangements.
In common configurations, controls use an outdoor-temperature lockout: below or above a configured point, depending on the system’s logic, one heat source is prevented from running and the other serves the heating demand. A California Energy Commission memorandum dated April 25, 2025, describes outdoor-temperature lockout as a common control method and says the heat pump and furnace typically should not operate simultaneously in the configurations it discusses, due to the coil’s position downstream of the furnace. The actual equipment manufacturer’s requirements govern the installation. Read the CEC memorandum.
What temperature should the heat pump switch to the furnace?
There is no single changeover temperature that is best for every home. The switchover depends on the heat pump’s efficiency and operating limits, the furnace and system configuration, outdoor conditions, and local electricity and fuel costs. Trane notes that the changeover varies with heat-pump efficiency; Goodman also identifies local utility rates and fuel prices as relevant. Neither source supports a universal setting or guaranteed savings amount.

- Heat pump thermostat for home, non programmable, 2 heating and 1 cooling, electric or gas/oil configurable. (TIP: before purchasing, check to see if this thermostat is compatible with your old thermostat)
- Compatible With: Heat pump systems and Conventional force air, central gas, oil, or electric furnaces systems, Does NOT work with electric baseboard heat (120-240V).
- Not Compatible with 110-240V HVAC systems: like 120/240v electric baseboard heat and line voltage systems. and Not compatible with RV thermostat.
- Easy to read and use: Large digital display with large characters and green backlight, separate buttons for easy setpoint temperature, very suitable for middle-aged and elderly people to use.
- It gives precise temperature control with +/- 1 degree in Fahrenheit and Celsius for ultimate consistent control to keep your room comfortable all the time.
Ask the HVAC professional configuring the system to choose and verify the changeover and lockout settings for your equipment and local conditions. Do not copy a temperature from another home or assume that a thermostat’s factory setting is suitable for your system.
How do you know if a thermostat is compatible?
Compatibility is specific to the thermostat model and your installed equipment. Before buying, identify the heat pump and furnace by model number and check the thermostat’s documentation for each of these points:

- Before buying, please confirm whether the product is compatible with your system, and check the size of the product to see if it can cover the traces left on the wall of the old thermostat.
- Aowel AW721 non programmable heat pump thermostat for house up to 2 heating and 1 cooling multi-stage systems.
- Compatible with Heat Pump systems (with aux or emergency heat) and Heat Pump (without auxiliary/backup heat) systems, up to 2 Heat/ 1 Cool. 【the Menu Initialize Heat Pump System】
- Compatible with most 24V conventional single-stage systems (i.e. conventional force air, central gas, oil, electric furnaces single-stage system, up to 2 Heat/ 1 Cool ). 【Note: You need to enter the menu and set it to conventional system】
- 【WARNING】1. Does not work with conventional multistage systems, mini split systems and 12v rv thermostats. ( 2. Not compatible with 110-240V electric heat systems (like electric baseboard heat, line voltage, convectors, radiant-ceiling heat).
- Equipment type: It must support a heat pump paired with a furnace, not just a conventional furnace or a heat pump with electric auxiliary heat.
- Stages: Confirm that its documented heat-pump and furnace stages match your equipment. Do not assume every version in a product family supports the same configuration.
- Wiring and terminals: Check the equipment wiring against the thermostat’s wiring diagram and supported terminals.
- Power: Verify whether the thermostat needs a C-wire or another approved power method.
- Changeover controls: Confirm how the actual installation handles dual-fuel changeover, heat-pump lockout, and any required interlock.
- Configuration: Check whether installer settings or professional setup are required for your system.
For example, Honeywell’s T6 Pro installation guidance says dual fuel with Y2 applies to the TH6320U variant; that detail should not be generalized to every T6 Pro model. Check Honeywell’s T6 Pro installation guidance. Google lists supported Nest dual-fuel configurations, but advises using its compatibility checker for the actual system before purchase. Check Nest thermostat compatibility.
Bosch says its BCC thermostat family requires 24VAC and a C-wire, while describing a contractor-installed microUSB adapter as an alternate power method in some cases. Its FAQ also includes firmware-specific stage-delay overshoot notes for the BCC110 and BCC100; these are product-specific details, not a general rule for thermostats. Read Bosch’s thermostat FAQ.

Which thermostat should you consider?
Start with documented compatibility for your precise system, not app features or a product-family name. The examples below have relevant manufacturer documentation, but they are not a ranked or independently tested “best” list.
| Option | What the documentation establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell Home T6 Pro TH6320U | Honeywell’s installation guidance covers heat-pump installer settings and specifies dual fuel with Y2 for the TH6320U variant. | Confirm the exact model, equipment stages, wiring, and configuration requirements in the installation guidance: Honeywell T6 Pro guide. |
| Supported Google Nest configurations | Google lists dual-fuel configurations its Nest thermostats support and recommends professional setup for dual fuel. | Use Google’s current compatibility checker with your actual equipment details: Nest compatibility. |
| Bosch BCC family | Bosch documents 24VAC and C-wire requirements for the family, as well as product- and firmware-specific support notes. | Check the FAQ for your exact model and installation before deciding whether its power and stage support fit: Bosch thermostat FAQ. |
These examples do not establish which thermostat is best for a particular home. Choose only after matching the thermostat’s documented support to the equipment and wiring on site; connected features matter only after that check.

Can you install a dual-fuel thermostat yourself?
Professional setup is recommended. Google warns that incorrect dual-fuel choices can damage the system, and Honeywell advises users who are uncertain about dual-fuel wiring or system type to contact an HVAC professional. The correct terminals, installer settings, and changeover controls depend on the equipment, so a universal DIY wiring sequence would be unsafe.
Before scheduling installation or requesting a compatibility review, gather the outdoor heat-pump and indoor furnace model numbers and, if available, clear information about the existing thermostat wiring. Follow the thermostat and equipment manuals; do not guess at a wire’s function based only on its color. Honeywell’s wiring guidance explains when to consult an HVAC professional: How do I wire my thermostat?
