The SOLO 425 is the clearer choice if you mainly spray liquid formulations; the SOLO 475-B is the diaphragm-pump option to consider when your task calls for wettable powder or a bleach solution. Both are 4-gallon backpack sprayers, but their pump types, stated formulation uses, and pressure ceilings differ. This is a manufacturer-based guide to choosing between two portable SOLO models, not an independent performance ranking.

Specifications and application descriptions are from SOLO’s 425 product page, SOLO’s 475-B product page, and its February 2025 catalog. They describe manufacturer claims, not comparative test results.
How piston and diaphragm pumps differ in this choice
SOLO 425: piston pump
SOLO describes the 425 as a piston-pump sprayer for liquid formulations. Its product page lists uses including fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, pest control, and disinfectants. Those broad categories do not confirm compatibility with every specific product: check the sprayer manual and the formulation’s label before filling the tank.
SOLO 475-B: diaphragm pump
SOLO describes the 475-B as a diaphragm-pump model for wettable powders, liquids, and bleach solutions, and says the pump can pass small abrasive particles. The product page calls the model bleach resistant, but that should not be taken as approval for every bleach concentration, mixture, or work environment. Confirm the particular chemical and use against the current manual and label.

What pressure means for application
The 425’s “up to 90 psi” is a maximum capability, not a recommended setting for every job. SOLO Product Support says the optional pressure-control plug is required to operate models 425/435 above 60 psi. Its regulator positions are 15, 30, 45, and 60 psi. The 475-B is listed at up to 60 psi.
Pressure affects both output and drift. SOLO Product Support explains that higher pressure applies more chemical in a given time but produces smaller droplets with more drift. Choose pressure to suit the product label, target, and conditions rather than defaulting to the maximum. See SOLO’s pressure-regulation guidance.

Capacity, carried weight, and comfort features
Both models hold 4 gallons, and SOLO’s February 2025 catalog lists each at 11 pounds. For the 425, SOLO’s current product page separately lists 11 pounds dry and an average full weight of 43 pounds, calculated using its stated assumption of 8 pounds per gallon of water. Actual filled weight varies with the liquid and amount carried.
SOLO describes the 425 as having a metal frame, large fill opening, lock-on/lock-off valve, 48-inch hose, and interchangeable pump handle. These are manufacturer-listed features; check the exact model and SKU listing for what is included.

Nozzles, parts, and model compatibility
SOLO says its backpack sprayers use interchangeable nozzle systems. The 425 page names adjustable, fan, hollow-cone, and jet-stream nozzle types and notes TeeJet compatibility. Included tips can vary by model variant or revision, so verify the contents of the specific SKU before purchase. Nozzle choice affects the spray pattern; follow the chemical label and the equipment instructions for the application.
For manuals and parts lists, start at the SOLO U.S. Manual Download Center and match the model number. SOLO’s U.S. professional category also lists other formats and capacities, including the 5-gallon 435 piston and 485 diaphragm models; their specifications were not compared here. An international accessories listing is not proof that a part is stocked in the U.S. or fits a particular revision.

How to choose safely
- Identify the formulation. Use the manufacturer’s stated applications as a starting point: liquids for the 425; wettable powders, liquids, or bleach solutions for the 475-B. Check both the current sprayer manual and the chemical product label for the exact product.
- Match the pressure and spray pattern to the job. Do not assume the highest pressure is best; account for drift, the target, and label directions.
- Confirm the exact model and included equipment. Check the SKU, nozzle configuration, pressure-control setup, and parts compatibility rather than relying on a broad model-family description.
- Consider the load you will carry. Use the dry weight for the empty sprayer and account for the weight of the actual liquid and any accessories when estimating a full load.
SOLO’s February 2025 catalog calls the 425 and 475-B “flagship” sprayers in its line; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent ranking. The comparison here focuses on these two portable 4-gallon backpack models rather than every sprayer SOLO sells.
