The best metal buffet is the one that fits your room and stores what you actually use—not necessarily the one with the most industrial-looking finish. Compare exact dimensions, construction, storage layout, finish, assembly, and anchoring before choosing. “Buffet,” “sideboard,” and “credenza” overlap in retailer listings, so judge each piece by its proportions and features rather than its label.
What makes a metal buffet a distinctive choice?
Metal brings a defined, industrial look to dining-room storage, and it can be paired with wood or softer finishes to balance the effect. That style is not proof that a cabinet is made entirely of metal: listings may describe a steel frame, metal sides, legs, or hardware alongside a wood top or shelves. How to choose the right one for your room
1. Measure the space and route
Measure the wall, the path into the room, and the clearance needed to open doors and drawers. Compare the piece’s exact width, depth, and height with those measurements; the word “buffet” alone says little about whether it will fit. A retailer guide gives 34–38 inches as a typical buffet height and 16–20 inches as a typical depth, but these are general heuristics, not building standards. Use them as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the item’s listed dimensions.
2. Check what it is actually made of
Look for the material of the body, frame, sides, top, and shelves rather than relying on a product name or photograph. For example, IKEA’s FJÄLLBO sideboard (article 005.027.99) combines a steel frame and side panel with a solid-pine top and shelf; it is not an all-metal cabinet. IKEA’s product page lists dimensions of 43¾ inches wide × 18½ inches deep × 37⅜ inches high and describes the piece for use in a living room or dining area.

3. Match the storage to what you own
Choose shelves, doors, and drawers according to the items you plan to store. Adjustable shelves can help with dishes or taller serving pieces; drawers can keep linens and flatware organized; a mixed layout offers both. Retail listings may also include features such as wine racks or hutches, so check the exact configuration rather than assuming it from the category name. 4. Compare finish with the room
Consider how the metal color and finish will sit alongside the room’s wood tones and other finishes. Dark or lighter finishes, exposed details, and combinations with wood can each create a different effect. Treat these as design choices rather than evidence that one finish is more durable.

5. Review assembly and anchoring directions
Check whether assembly is required and whether the product’s instructions call for wall anchoring. Follow the item-specific guidance and select fasteners suitable for your wall; a single screw or plug is not appropriate for every home or wall type.
A documented mixed-material example
The FJÄLLBO shows why checking specifications matters: its published dimensions are 43¾ × 18½ × 37⅜ inches, and its listed materials include both steel and solid pine. IKEA gives this model the following product-specific warning: “WARNING! Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored. Use suitable screws and plugs for your home. If you are uncertain, seek professional advice.” Follow that warning for this item; do not assume every buffet has identical instructions.
Buffet, sideboard, or credenza?
Retailers use these labels with considerable overlap. Traditionally, “buffet” is associated with dining and serving, “sideboard” with a longer, low storage cabinet, and “credenza” with a low, sleek form.
