A non-electric kettle heats on a stovetop rather than an electric base. The right choice depends first on whether its maker confirms compatibility with your cooktop, then on capacity, materials, handling, care, and warranty. The models below are manufacturer-described options, not independently tested winners.
What makes a kettle non-electric?
A non-electric kettle is heated by an external cooking surface, usually a gas, electric, ceramic-glass, or induction cooktop. Many stovetop models are designed to whistle when the water boils. Their compatibility is model-specific: material alone does not establish that a kettle will work on a particular cooktop.
Stovetop kettle models to compare
Manufacturer specifications offer useful starting points, but they do not establish comparative boil times, durability, or an objectively best-performing kettle.

How to choose a stovetop kettle
- Confirm cooktop compatibility. Check the maker’s instructions for the exact model, especially for induction. Induction requires magnetic cookware; general material guidance is not a substitute for model-specific confirmation.
- Choose capacity for your routine. The cited Le Creuset models range from 1.6 L to 2.1 L, while the cited SMEG model is 2.3 L. Consider how much water you typically need and whether the filled kettle will be comfortable to lift.
- Compare handling and storage. Handle shape, heat-resistant components, lid access, and whether a handle folds can affect lifting, filling, and storage. Check the model details rather than assuming these features from the kettle’s appearance.
- Check the base against your burner. Le Creuset and KitchenAid advise using a burner similar in size to the kettle base. This helps avoid exposing sides or handles to excess heat.
- Review care and warranty terms. Cleaning instructions and guarantees differ. The Le Creuset UK guide says its cited models are not dishwasher safe and lists a five-year guarantee; verify terms for the region and model you plan to purchase.
Use and care safely
Follow the kettle maker’s directions and use moderate heat. KitchenAid says high heat is not recommended for its non-electric kettle guidance; overheating can discolor stainless steel, and porcelain-enamel bottoms may fuse to glass cooktops if overheated. Le Creuset’s care guidance also recommends a burner similar in size to the kettle base and cautions that metal surfaces can be hot after heating.
- Do not let a gas flame climb up the kettle’s sides.
- On a glass cooktop, lift the kettle rather than sliding it to avoid scratching the surface.
- Remove the kettle from the cooktop after use.
- Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and handling directions for the exact kettle.
KitchenAid’s general induction guidance notes that induction needs magnetic cookware and identifies stainless steel as a suitable option, but that does not certify every stainless-steel kettle for induction. Confirm the specific model’s compatibility in the KitchenAid kettle buying guide. For additional manufacturer handling and heat-source guidance, consult KitchenAid’s non-electric kettle tips and Le Creuset’s care and use instructions.
