Check availability and evidence before treating a model as “best”
The manuals establish product types and instructions, not independent performance rankings. Check current retailer listings for availability and exact model numbers; compare only specifications actually provided for those models. The available documentation does not support a claim that one listed Holmes heater heats faster, costs less to run, or covers more space than another.
Check the exact model’s safety instructions

- HQH307: Holmes says to plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or relocatable power tap such as a power strip. Its manual also says not to block air intakes or exhaust and not to use the heater on soft surfaces where openings could be obstructed.
- HCH820: Its owner’s guide says to position the heater 36 inches (91 cm) away from objects. This is HCH820-specific guidance, not a general clearance for every Holmes heater.
Important: check whether an older heater is recalled
Holmes’s HCH1823M recall FAQ identifies these affected model numbers: HCH1823M-BTU, HCH1823M-PTU, HCH1823M-RTU, HCH1823M-UTU, and HCH1823M-WTU. The FAQ says the affected heaters may overheat, smoke, or catch fire because of improper wiring and/or an inadequate electrical connection.
Find the model number on the rating label on the bottom of the heater. If it matches one of the listed models, Holmes instructs owners to stop using it immediately and follow the recall instructions. This warning applies to the five named models; it is not a recall notice for every Holmes heater.
