Successful sanding starts with the surface and the finish you want—not a one-size-fits-all grit schedule. Match the abrasive and tool to the material and task, work consistently, inspect between passes, and control the dust. Wood-specific advice below applies to wood; use the material or coating maker’s directions for other surfaces.
Choose the abrasive and tool for the job
Before sanding, identify the substrate, any existing coating, the intended finish, and whether you need to remove material or prepare a surface for finishing. Those choices determine the abrasive, tool, and sequence. A grit recommendation for bare wood may not suit a painted surface, drywall, metal, or an automotive coating.
For wood, Festool lists its Rubin 2 abrasives for hardwood and wood composites in grits from P40 to P220. That is a product range, not a recommended progression for every wood-sanding job. Check that the abrasive format and attachment fit your tool, and that the abrasive is suited to the material and coating. Festool’s abrasive overview describes how abrasive choice and dispersion affect dust clearing and scratch depth.
Use coarser abrasives when material removal is needed and finer ones to remove scratches left by the previous pass. Move through a progressive sequence rather than jumping arbitrarily between grits; follow the material and coating manufacturer’s guidance where available. There is no single sequence established here for all surfaces or finishes.

Sand wood smoothly without visible scratches
On wood, keep the movement controlled and consistent. For the belt-sanding method it describes, Festool advises moving in the direction of the grain and warns that sanding against it can leave marks that are difficult to correct. This guidance is specific to the described wood-sanding method; don’t assume it applies unchanged to every machine or substrate.
Keep the tool moving at a uniform pace rather than dwelling in one place. Festool’s wood-sanding guide says a uniform belt-sander movement helps produce even material removal across the workpiece. Its advice concerns a belt sander, not every sanding tool. Read Festool’s wood sanding machine guide.

Inspect the surface after each pass. Remove sanding dust first, then look for scratches or uneven areas before moving to a finer abrasive or applying a topcoat. Correct marks while they are visible; a finish can make missed scratches more apparent.
Adjust sanding motion to the task
Different tool motions remove material at different rates. Festool describes a 3 mm stroke as suited to fine sanding and 5–7 mm strokes as removing more material. These are manufacturer-specific examples from its sander guidance, not universal settings for every tool. Festool explains the sanding motions and stroke sizes.

Use the tool and motion appropriate to the workpiece: stock removal calls for a different approach from final finish sanding. Keep the abrasive flat and the movement even where the tool’s instructions call for it, and avoid letting the machine sit in one spot long enough to create an uneven area.

Sanding can put fine dust into the air. OSHA notes that “Sanders produce a considerable quantity of fine wood dust,” and its wood-dust overview identifies sanding as a process that can make particles airborne. Use extraction suited to the tool and material, and provide ventilation appropriate to the work area. OSHA’s guidance is occupational safety material; workplace controls and requirements depend on the job and jurisdiction. Choose eye and respiratory protection for the material and conditions. Festool recommends eye protection against flying particles and a dust mask for heavy-dust work or especially harmful materials. Follow the tool’s instructions and applicable safety requirements; a mask is not a replacement for effective dust capture. Festool’s healthy-work guidance discusses protective measures.
Belt sanders have additional contact hazards at their in-running rolls. Keep hands, loose clothing, and jewelry clear, and use the machine’s safeguards. OSHA describes these hazard points and safeguards in its sander safety guidance.
