Conventional exterior Portland cement stucco is installed as a wall system, not simply spread over a surface. The work typically proceeds from confirming the approved wall assembly and preparing the substrate to installing required water-management details and lath, applying the scratch and brown coats, and finishing and curing the plaster. The exact requirements depend on the substrate, local code, project details, and product instructions.

1. Confirm the wall assembly and requirements

Start by identifying whether the wall is framed construction with lath or a permitted solid base such as masonry or concrete. That choice affects preparation and the plaster system. Confirm the approved wall details, local code edition and amendments, required water-resistive layers, flashing, terminations, lath or accessories, thickness, and coat count before work begins.

For example, the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), Chapter 7 requires exterior plaster installation to comply with ASTM C926, ASTM C1063, and the code provisions. The model code is not proof that a particular jurisdiction has adopted that edition; check with the local building department and the project documents.

2. Prepare the substrate

Prepare the surface for the selected assembly rather than assuming one method works for every wall. ASTM C926 covers plaster application over lathing and solid plaster bases; its scope includes substrate preparation, curing, environmental conditions, material storage and protection, and application. Its listing describes methods that can include cleaning or mechanical preparation, but the substrate and project specification determine what is appropriate. See ASTM’s active C926-26 listing and verify which edition the jurisdiction and project documents require.

3. Install water-management details, lath, and accessories

Before plastering, complete the flashing, water-resistive layers, lath, and accessories required by the approved wall design. Pay particular attention to openings, corners, control joints, transitions, and terminations so the assembly has its specified support and drainage path. For lath assemblies, follow ASTM C1063 where applicable, the adopted code, project details, and product instructions. There is no universal fastener schedule or detail set that can safely be inferred for every wall.

4. Apply and score the scratch coat

In a three-coat system, the scratch coat is the first plaster base coat. Apply it with the contact and coverage required for the specified assembly. When it is firm, score it in one direction to create a key for the next coat. ASTM C926 application excerpts describe scoring once the coat is firm; one manufacturer guide uses “thumb-print hard” as an example of timing. That phrase is an illustrative product instruction, not a universal test for every mix or condition. See the QUIKRETE stucco-wall guide alongside the project specification.

5. Apply and level the brown coat

Apply the brown coat when the scratch coat can support the work without being damaged. Bring the surface to the intended plane with a straightedge or rod, fill low areas, and float it uniformly as the specified system requires. ASTM C926 excerpts describe these application steps, but the required thickness and interval depend on the assembly and the full applicable standard.

6. Apply the finish coat

Apply the finish coat at the specified thickness and with the required coverage and bond. The finish texture, color, and application method depend on the selected product and project design. Avoid using one generic wait time for all stucco systems: the 2024 IRC states that the finish coat for two-coat cement plaster may not be applied sooner than 48 hours after the first coat. That minimum is specific to the two-coat condition stated in the code; it does not establish the timing for three-coat work. Check the full standard and the current product directions for the system being installed.

Follow the applicable standard and product directions for environmental conditions, curing, and protection of materials and newly applied plaster. Requirements can vary with the system and conditions; do not assume a universal curing duration or temperature limit without checking the governing documents.

What to verify before work starts

  • The permitted substrate and coat count for the selected assembly.
  • The locally adopted code edition and any amendments.
  • Approved water-resistive layers, flashing, drainage, terminations, joints, lath, and accessories.
  • Specified thicknesses, material compatibility, and application intervals.
