Snowbanks can send meltwater toward cracks, basement windows, and other vulnerable spots during a thaw. The risk depends on drainage and the condition of the home; damage is possible, not inevitable.
Why snow against a house can cause trouble
Snow piled beside the foundation can melt into a concentrated supply of water right next to the home. If the ground is saturated, drainage is poor, or water can reach a crack or a poorly sealed basement window, it may enter the house. The Government of Canada identifies these as risks as temperatures rise: its winter home-safety guidance advises keeping snowbanks away from foundations where possible.
The concern is not that snow touching a wall automatically damages it. The outcome depends on grading, drainage, the foundation’s condition, nearby openings, and how quickly and where the snow melts.
Where to put shoveled snow
When space allows, make the pile about 1 to 1.5 metres (3 to 5 feet) from the foundation. The Government of Canada recommends that distance where possible; the City of Mississauga gives a similar 3-to-5-foot recommendation from exterior walls, windows, and basement entrances. These are practical recommendations, not universal code requirements.

Choose a spot based on where the meltwater will go, not distance alone. Prefer a location from which water can drain away from the house. Keep the pile clear of:
- Basement window wells, foundation openings, and basement entrances.
- Downspouts and the routes water needs to follow away from the building.
- Walkways, drains, and low areas where melting snow could leave standing water.
- Property boundaries or locations where runoff could create a problem for a neighbor; local rules may differ.
Mississauga also advises keeping a path open for meltwater: City of Mississauga snow and ice guidance.

Window wells and foundation openings
Keep snow and ice out of window wells and away from basement windows and other openings. These are points where water may get inside if they are poorly sealed or exposed to accumulating meltwater.
Downspouts and grading
Make sure snow does not block a downspout or the route water follows after it leaves the roof. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit recommends extending downspouts at least two metres from the foundation: its flooding and home guidance. That recommendation concerns downspout discharge; it does not establish that an extension will fix a grading or foundation problem.

Grading and drainage are part of the same water-management picture as snow placement. If the yard slopes toward the house, or an ice ridge from roof snowmelt redirects water back toward it, moving a snow pile may not be enough to keep water flowing away.
If there is nowhere suitable to pile snow
If every available spot drains toward the home, a window well, a walkway, or a neighboring property, avoid creating a larger pile beside the foundation just for convenience. If water has entered the home before, or the lot’s slope and drainage make a safe pile location unclear, ask a local drainage professional for site-specific advice. Snow placement and a downspout extension do not resolve an underlying foundation defect.

Shovel without adding a safety risk
Moving snow can itself be strenuous. UConn Extension recommends pushing snow rather than lifting it, avoiding throwing it over your shoulders, and avoiding overexertion in cold weather: UConn Extension snow-shoveling safety guidance.
This advice is about snow moved at ground level. Clearing snow from a roof is a separate task with fall and structural hazards; Ontario provides separate guidance on roof snow: Ontario roof snow removal guidance.
