These are related but different effects: an ordinary reflective roof coating is not automatically a daytime radiative-cooling material, and neither guarantees that a building can do without air conditioning.
How can a coating cool a roof?
Sunlight heats a roof when the surface absorbs solar energy. A reflective coating reduces that gain by sending more sunlight back instead of turning it into heat. This can help limit heat entering the building, but it is not the same as radiative cooling.
Passive daytime radiative cooling combines two properties: the material reflects incoming sunlight while emitting its own thermal energy as infrared radiation. Some of that infrared energy can escape through the atmosphere’s transmission window, roughly 8 to 13 micrometers. If the surface loses more heat this way than it gains from sunlight and its surroundings, it can become cooler than ambient air.
That balance depends on the material and conditions. A product’s solar reflectance alone does not establish its infrared emittance or prove that it will reach below-ambient temperatures on a particular roof.

What did the landmark 2014 experiment demonstrate?
Raman and colleagues’ 2014 Nature paper demonstrated daytime radiative cooling with a purpose-built photonic structure, not a generic paint. The rooftop device used seven alternating layers of hafnium dioxide (HfO2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2). In the reported experiment, it reflected 97% of incident sunlight and reached 4.9°C below ambient under direct sunlight exceeding 850 W/m²; its measured cooling power at ambient temperature was 40.1 W/m². Nature, 2014.
Those figures describe that specific experimental structure and its test conditions. They are not performance guarantees for commercial coatings or evidence that a coated building will achieve the same temperature difference.

How do newer coatings differ from the photonic device?
Commercial development has moved toward simpler sunlight-scattering materials, including ceramic cool roofs, nanostructure coatings and reflective polymers. A 2025 RIN.pw feature attributed to MIT Technology Review characterizes these approaches as more durable and scalable than the earlier multilayer photonic design. That is the feature’s broad characterization, not a harmonized comparison of tested products. RIN.pw feature, 2025.

The cited feature reports that companies were pursuing coatings reflecting at least 94% of sunlight in most climates and above 97% in humid tropical climates. Those are figures reported by the feature, not independently verified specifications for every product or a guarantee of building-level cooling. RIN.pw feature, 2025.
Can a roof coating reduce air-conditioning use?
Potentially, but results depend on the building, roof, climate, weather and installation. The 2025 RIN.pw feature, attributed to MIT Technology Review, reports that some pilot cases reduced air-conditioning energy needs by 15% to 20%. The feature does not establish that range as a universal outcome or a product guarantee. RIN.pw feature, 2025.

Radiative heat rejection is less effective when clouds interfere, and dust or air pollution can reduce a surface’s reflectivity. Some coatings may also lose reflectivity as they age. A coating should therefore be evaluated as one part of a building’s cooling strategy, alongside insulation, ventilation, shading and efficient mechanical systems.
The feature quotes Qiaoqiang Gan, professor of materials science and applied physics at KAUST, cautioning against treating radiative cooling as a universal solution; it also says efficient active air conditioning remains needed. Gan describes the broader possibility as “personal thermal management,” including potential passive cooling in clothing. That prospect is distinct from evidence about a roof coating’s performance.

What should builders ask before specifying one?
- What kind of product is it? Confirm whether it is an ordinary reflective roof coating or a radiative-cooling product, and request the technical documentation supporting that description.
- What is the evidence? Ask whether performance figures come from controlled material tests, a modeled building, a field pilot or vendor claims. Check the climate, sky conditions, measurement period and roof assembly used.
- Will it work on this roof? Verify substrate compatibility, preparation, application requirements, weather exposure and maintenance needs with the manufacturer and roofing professional.
- How will reflectivity hold up? Ask how soiling and weathering affect performance and what maintenance or recoating schedule is expected.
- What are the material trade-offs? The feature raises concerns about durable fluoropolymers. Aaswath Raman asks whether long-term scale-up can preserve durability and low cost without such materials; the available coverage does not establish a single answer for all products. RIN.pw feature, 2025.
For commercial systems, SkyCool describes roof and process-cooling products based on its film technology; that information is vendor-supplied and should be assessed against current specifications, site conditions and project requirements. SkyCool.
