In Las Vegas heat, put people’s safety ahead of troubleshooting. Before authorizing work, verify the contractor’s Nevada license and relevant classification. NV Energy also lists a 2026 tune-up incentive for eligible customers, but program terms and contractor participation should be confirmed before booking.
What to check when your AC is not cooling
Limit do-it-yourself troubleshooting to settings and accessible maintenance. Do not open electrical compartments or attempt refrigerant work.
- Check the thermostat. Confirm it is set to cooling, the set point is below the room temperature, and the display and controls appear to be operating normally.
- Inspect the air filter. If it is visibly dirty or incorrectly seated, replace it with the size and type specified for your system and follow the equipment manufacturer’s replacement guidance. A clogged filter can restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance. The Department of Energy’s home-cooling guidance identifies filter care as a basic maintenance step.
- Look for an obvious drain issue. A drain problem can affect operation. If you see a leak or cannot identify a simple, safe cause, contact a technician rather than dismantling equipment.
- Check the outdoor unit from a safe distance. Keep the area around it clear enough for air to flow. Do not remove panels or reach into the unit. EPA recommends keeping the unit clear and cleaning dust and dirt from cooling coils as part of maintenance; leave disassembly or work near live electrical components to a professional. If the system still blows warm air, will not start, or stops cooling after these checks, arrange professional diagnosis. Electrical control failure is one possible reason an air conditioner will not start, according to the Department of Energy; it is not a reason to open the equipment yourself.
When heat makes the problem urgent
If the home is becoming dangerously hot, move people to an air-conditioned location and follow local heat alerts instead of continuing to troubleshoot. EPA warns that heat-related illness can be deadly and advises calling 911 for emergency help. Fans move air but do not cool it; EPA says not to rely on fans to prevent heat illness when indoor temperatures are in the mid-90s Fahrenheit or hotter. How to choose an AC repair contractor in Nevada
Check the contractor’s active license, the classification that covers the work you need, and any disciplinary history with the Nevada State Contractors Board. Do not treat an advertisement or directory listing as proof of current licensing. The Board’s general requirements FAQ explains licensing requirements, and Nevada Administrative Code Chapter 624 describes the classifications and their scope.
- C-21b: Covers installation, repair, service, and maintenance of air-conditioning equipment and related ductwork.
- C-21d: Covers repair and replacement of parts of existing air-conditioning and refrigeration units, subject to stated limits.
Ask which classification applies to the proposed job and verify it directly with the Board before authorizing work. A contractor’s license and classification should fit the actual scope, not just the general label “HVAC.”

Questions to ask about refrigerant work
Refrigerant handling is professional work. Ask whether the technician doing it has EPA Section 608 certification. If refrigerant is low, ask the contractor to locate and repair the leak rather than simply adding refrigerant; repeatedly topping off a leaking system does not address the cause. EPA’s homeowner and consumer FAQ explains refrigerant rules and technician certification.
Do not let anyone substitute a refrigerant simply because it is described as an alternative. EPA notes that refrigerants are not universal drop-in replacements: the system should use the refrigerant for which it was designed. Ask the technician to identify the specified refrigerant and explain any proposed change.

Its listed terms are shown below; they are program incentives, not independent estimates of savings. How to compare repair and replacement proposals
There is no supported Las Vegas-wide average repair bill or universal repair-versus-replacement cutoff in the available local information. Instead of relying on a generic threshold, request written, itemized estimates and compare what each proposal actually includes:
- The diagnosed failure and how the contractor confirmed it.
- The repair scope, parts, labor, and any work that is excluded.
- The system’s age and overall condition, as assessed by the technician.
- Warranty coverage for parts and labor.
- Expected operating costs and the assumptions behind any estimate.
- Whether an eligible tune-up incentive applies to the proposed service.
Ask the contractor to explain repair and replacement options in writing so you can compare the same scope of work. Do not treat an incentive as proof that a repair is needed or that a particular proposal is the best value.
