Taylor Swift’s Watch Hill mansion began as Holiday House, a summer estate built for Philadelphia socialite Mrs. George Grant Snowden. It later became known as High Watch, passed through the hands of Rebekah Harkness and local preservation-minded owners, and was bought by Swift in 2013. Its history is also the source material for Swift’s song “The Last Great American Dynasty”—though the song is a creative retelling, not a historical record.
Where is Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island mansion?
The property is at 16 Bluff Avenue in Watch Hill, a coastal village within Westerly, Rhode Island. The state tourism guide describes the house as Colonial-style and places it on a hilltop overlooking the area. It is a private residence, not a public attraction.
Who built Holiday House?
Before the mansion stood there, the hill was used as a lookout, according to a local Westerly history account. In 1929, Mrs. George Grant Snowden acquired a five-acre summit site from the estate of Eugene Atwood and named her new home Holiday House. The local account says she intended it to be Watch Hill’s largest cottage. The Rhode Island tourism guide gives 1930 as the year construction was completed; the local account describes a building period of more than two years, so the exact construction chronology is not settled.
How did Holiday House become High Watch?
The Harkness years
William Hale Harkness bought Holiday House in 1948, according to the local history. His wife, Rebekah Harkness, became its best-known pre-Swift occupant. The state tourism guide connects her to dance patronage and the Harkness Ballet after William’s death.

Some accounts of Harkness’s life became part of the house’s folklore. The tourism guide, for example, recounts a story that she dyed a neighbor’s pet green, while noting the animal was a cat—not the dog in Swift’s lyric. Such anecdotes should be treated as reported stories rather than proof of every detail in the song.
Preservation, renovation, and a new name
After Rebekah Harkness left, she conveyed Holiday House to Watch Hill Associates in 1973. The local history describes the partnership as a group of residents seeking to protect the property from development. The house lot was later purchased by Gurdon B. Wattles. According to that account, renovation reduced the original forty-room house to about 11,000 square feet, with eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms. Over several years, the Wattles family acquired the other lots and renamed the estate High Watch.

The Wattles family sold High Watch to James and Marlene Benson in 1996 for $3.5 million, the local history reports. That account says the house was little used and sat empty much of the time.
When did Taylor Swift buy the mansion, and how large is it?
Swift bought the property in 2013 for a reported $17.75 million, according to both the Rhode Island tourism guide and The Washington Post. Those sources describe it as approximately 11,000 square feet. A 2026 Boston Globe account gives a different figure: 12,657 square feet. The available accounts do not explain the discrepancy, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive measurement.

What is the connection to “The Last Great American Dynasty”?
Swift’s “The Last Great American Dynasty,” on her 2020 album folklore, draws on Rebekah Harkness and Holiday House. The Rhode Island tourism guide and The Washington Post both connect the song to Harkness and the estate. The song turns the house’s past into a vivid narrative, but its lyrics are not a substitute for independent documentation of the people, events, or anecdotes they describe.

The Washington Post reported that the property became associated with celebrity-filled Independence Day parties after Swift bought it; the state tourism guide also mentions July Fourth gatherings. Those reports do not establish that a party took place every year. The Washington Post also reported trespassing attempts after the purchase.

Recent coverage describes a guarded private home, not a visitor site. In June 2026, the Associated Press covered unfounded wedding speculation sparked by a tent at a neighboring location and described guards and cameras while noting that local residents were fielding rumors. A July 2026 Boston Globe report said Swift’s public visibility around Watch Hill had diminished and that security at the house was more noticeable. Neither report establishes public access, and visitors should respect the property and its neighbors.
