For a practical starting point, use the free ITTF Foundation Tables 4 ALL construction resources and select a design that fits your materials and intended use. Its trestle instructions show a 274 cm × 152 cm tabletop and explain how to adapt a smaller plywood sheet with extensions. That is a buildable reference—not a universal specification for every DIY table.
Choose a plan before buying or cutting materials
The ITTF Foundation’s Tables 4 ALL project page links several construction manuals, including trestle, recycled-material and kit options. Compare them against your available sheet sizes, desired playing surface, support arrangement, storage conditions and whether accessibility features matter for your use. No single design is right for every workshop or setting.
Read the chosen manual all the way through before cutting. Dimensions and materials in one design should not be assumed to apply to another.
Dimensions in the ITTF Foundation trestle plan
The ITTF Foundation’s 2023 Trestle Table Instructions show a tabletop measuring 274 cm × 152 cm. The plan also illustrates making that size from a 244 cm × 122 cm plywood sheet by adding extensions. Those sheet dimensions are identified as common in the manual’s Ghana example; measure your own sheet and adapt the cut plan to the stock actually available where you live.

The extensions are attached with strong glue and nails, using support pieces beneath the sheet. The instructions call for sanding the upper face smooth after the supports are fixed. Follow the manual’s trestle assembly approach, including its use of wedges to position the trestles.
Select tabletop material and thickness for the design
The ITTF’s table-quality guidance allows a range of continuous tabletop materials for general use, including plywood, particleboard, plastics, metals, concrete and fibreglass. The finish affects the friction of the playing surface, so material alone does not determine how a table plays.
A separate manual, Building Handcrafted Table Tennis Tables, says its carpenters selected 1.9 cm plywood for the designs in that manual, describing it as light, resistant and suitable for quality ball bounce in those builds. Treat that as a design-specific choice, not a thickness rule for all tables. Check the chosen plan’s structural details and the plywood available locally before settling on a thickness.
Account for humidity and storage
The ITTF guidance notes: “Wood is a natural product susceptible to the effects of moisture, and the dimensions and shape of the table can therefore change according to humidity.” For a wooden tabletop, consider where it will be used and stored, and how it will be protected from moisture. The cited plans do not establish that a standard indoor woodworking build will withstand outdoor exposure; do not assume outdoor durability without a weather-suitable design and materials.

Check whether the plan suits accessibility needs
The handcrafted-table manual reports that its designs were tested and improved through practical projects in Algeria, Tahiti, Cameroon, South Africa, Kenya and France, with adaptations to local conditions. This provenance applies to those manual designs; it does not mean every home-built table or every plan has been tested.
Some designs in that manual are intended for para table tennis and account for leg placement. In that specific context, the manual describes a 40 cm dimension from the end of the table to the leg. Use the relevant drawing and requirements in the manual rather than applying that measurement to unrelated trestle designs.

Build from the drawing, not a guessed cut list
- Choose the construction manual. Start at the ITTF Foundation’s Tables 4 ALL page and select the style that matches your materials, space and intended use.
- Measure your stock. Confirm the actual plywood sheet dimensions and thickness before laying out cuts. The 244 cm × 122 cm sheet in the trestle instructions is the plan’s Ghana example, not a guaranteed local standard.
- Lay out the tabletop and supports from that plan. For the trestle example, work from the illustrated 274 cm × 152 cm tabletop and follow its extension and trestle details; do not substitute dimensions from another manual.
- Fix and finish the extensions as instructed. The trestle plan specifies strong glue and nails, support pieces beneath the sheet, and sanding the upper face smooth after assembly.
- Review the finished surface and intended environment. The ITTF guidance identifies surface finish as relevant to friction and humidity as a factor that can affect wood’s shape and dimensions.
Material availability varies by region, and these manuals do not establish a universal cost, build time or comparative bounce result. Use the selected manual as the construction authority for its own design.
