Yes—new shoots are growing from the stump of the Sycamore Gap tree. In an update on 28 September 2026, the National Trust reported a ring of shoots two to three feet tall and described the tree as being in recovery. That is encouraging regrowth, not proof that the original tree’s full canopy will return: its eventual form and long-term survival remain uncertain.
What has grown back at Sycamore Gap?
The original tree was felled in September 2023. Three years later, the National Trust reported that new shoots had formed a ring around the stump and reached two to three feet in height. The Trust said steps to reduce soil compaction around the roots and limit human disturbance were helping the shoots develop. See the National Trust’s 28 September 2026 update.
These shoots are growth from the surviving stump; they are not the return of the original mature canopy. The current progress is a sign of recovery, but it does not establish how large or long-lived the regrowth will become. The official sources do not provide a quantified forecast of the tree’s chances of survival.
What might happen to the shoots?
The National Trust plans to let the shoots grow for a few years and monitor how they develop before deciding how to manage them. Its project information identifies two possibilities, neither of which has been chosen:

- Broad canopy provides dense shade ideal for yards parks and open spaces where fast-growing trees are needed for coverage
- Distinctive peeling bark reveals striking white and gray tones adding visual texture even in winter landscapes
- Adaptable to a range of soil conditions and thrives in full sun perfect for long-term residential or public plantings
- Fast growth makes it a go-to choice for shade privacy or windbreak use in larger landscapes with room to mature
- Native to North America this iconic tree adds scale beauty and structure to both urban and rural environments
- Keep a coppiced stool: allow several stems to remain growing from the stump.
- Reduce to one tree: eventually select one shoot and remove the others.
The decision depends on how the regrowth develops. The National Trust has not set a date for a mature replacement tree.
How to protect the stump and shoots
The shoots and root-zone soil are fragile. A protective net cage has been placed over the stump by the National Trust and Northumberland National Park Authority. Visitors should admire and photograph the site from the path rather than approach the enclosure. The Park Authority’s protective-measures guidance asks visitors to:
Rank #2
- RAPID GROWTH RATE: This variety is famous for its ability to grow quickly, often adding several feet of height per year once established. These vigorous starters are a top choice for those who want a functional landscape piece that provides a fresh look and wide-reaching shade in a shorter amount of time.
- ESTABLISHED QUART POT: You receive an American Sycamore settled in its own quart-sized container, standing 6-12 inches tall. This established pot size is easy for you to handle and is intended to provide a strong beginning for the tree with a more developed root system compared to smaller seedlings or bare-root sticks.
- ICONIC EXFOLIATING BARK: Beyond its summer canopy, this tree features beautiful peeling bark that reveals patches of white, tan, and green. This architectural feature can add a high-impact look and bring a touch of sophisticated texture to your favorite outdoor location, especially during the winter months.
- COLD-HARDY & RESILIENT: The American Sycamore is a resilient option for home landscapes, designed to handle chilly winter temperatures and adapt to various soil conditions, including damp areas. Once established, it is intended to provide a sturdy and consistent presence in your backyard or garden row for decades
- LOW MAINTENANCE & ADAPTABLE: This deciduous tree is a simple choice for those who want a beautiful space without difficult upkeep. It is intended to thrive in sunny spots and requires very little daily attention once it has settled into its new location, making it a dependable choice for large open spaces.
- Stay outside the barrier and keep away from the stump and shoots.
- Not touch the shoots or climb on the fence or netting.
- Not leave tributes or other objects on the stump or the soil nearby.
Seasonal appearance can change: the Park Authority’s guidance notes that shoots lose their leaves in autumn and the stump is expected to be dormant in winter, with shoots hoped to return in spring. These are seasonal expectations, not a guarantee about future growth.
Can you visit Sycamore Gap?
Yes. The site is beside Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland National Park, and visitors can see the stump from the path while respecting the barrier. The National Trust’s circular walk from Housesteads Visitor Centre is five miles (eight kilometres), takes about two hours, and is rated moderate. Its route guide describes well-defined paths as well as steep ascents and descents and uneven ground. Check the National Trust’s route guide before setting out.

The largest remaining section of the original trunk is on permanent display at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre. It offers a way to see the tree’s wood at close range without disturbing the recovering stump. Northumberland National Park Authority’s Sycamore Gap page gives further site information.
How the tree’s legacy is continuing
In May 2026, the National Trust reported that 49 saplings grown from the original tree had been planted in communities across the UK. Each represents one foot of the original tree’s height. The Trust also named Helix Arts and George King Architects as winners of its public wood commission, The People’s Tree. The project includes stories, sound, exhibitions and workshops, and a planned sound sculpture with a time capsule; the completed work is expected by September 2027. What happened in the criminal case?
Northumbria Police reported that Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court after a trial in May 2025. On 15 July 2025, each was sentenced to four years and three months in prison for criminal damage to the tree and Hadrian’s Wall. Read the police sentencing statement.
