To choose drawer slides, identify the mounting style, measure the cabinet’s usable interior depth and the drawer, then check the exact slide’s clearance, length and capacity requirements. For a replacement, record the existing slide type and length first. Manufacturer instructions for the specific model take precedence over general sizing rules.
Choose the mounting style first
The slide has to fit the way the drawer and cabinet are built. The two common arrangements differ in where they attach and how much room they need.
Side-mount slides
Side-mount slides attach to the drawer sides and cabinet interior. They are a straightforward option for many replacement and new-installation projects, but they need usable space beside the drawer. Check the product’s required side clearance before buying.
Undermount slides
Undermount slides sit beneath the drawer and are concealed when it is closed. They require compatible drawer construction and model-specific clearances; some systems also use notches or clips. Do not assume an undermount slide will fit a drawer designed for side-mount hardware.

Measure usable depth before selecting slide length
Measure the cabinet’s inside depth where the slide will sit, not its outside depth, and measure the drawer depth. Account for obstructions, face frames or other features that reduce the available space. The slide’s required length and clearances must work within those dimensions.
King Slide gives subtracting one inch from cabinet depth as a general selection guideline, but that is not a universal rule. Confirm the selected model’s dimensional requirements. The Home Depot’s guidance also distinguishes sizing for side-mount and undermount slides, reinforcing the need to match the measurement method to the slide type.

Replacing existing slides
Before shopping, note how the current slides mount and measure their length. The Home Depot recommends matching the replacement to the existing installation type and length. Also check whether the drawer or cabinet has been altered, or whether an obstruction makes the original dimensions unsuitable for the new model.
Compare extension, motion and capacity
Once the mounting style and fit are established, compare the features that affect everyday use. These are separate choices: extension describes how far the drawer travels, while motion features affect how it opens or closes.

- Extension: Full extension lets the drawer travel along the slide’s full length; other options, such as three-quarter extension, provide less access.
- Motion: Standard slides, soft-close slides that damp the drawer as it returns, and push-open slides offer different operating behavior. Check whether a model combines features.
- Load rating: Verify the chosen product’s stated capacity and determine whether it suits the intended drawer and contents. Do not infer capacity from slide length or appearance.
King Slide identifies mounting style, length, extension, load and motion as selection factors, but does not identify one slide as suitable for every drawer. Use the current specifications for the exact product you intend to install.

Hole locations, dimensions and any required template vary by model. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than transferring measurements from a different slide.

- Confirm the cabinet and drawer dimensions against the selected slide’s instructions.
- Check that the cabinet and drawer are square before positioning the hardware.
- Mark and install the slides at the model’s specified positions, keeping them level.
- Test the drawer’s travel and closing action before considering the installation complete.
For an undermount system, verify drawer-box width, depth, notches and clips against that system’s own requirements. Drawer.com’s measuring guide gives examples for Blum TANDEM and MOVENTO systems; its deductions and notch dimensions apply to those examples and should not be generalized to other brands or models.
