Dry the area and note when the water returns. Location and timing narrow the cause—and help you avoid replacing a part that is not the problem.
First, make the leak safe to inspect
- If water is near electrical parts, stop using the refrigerator and request service. Do not reach behind or move a loaded refrigerator to investigate.
- Before inspecting a water filter or line, shut off the water supply if your model’s manual permits it. Follow the manual’s instructions for any service step; Samsung India’s drain guidance, for example, specifies unplugging the refrigerator first.
- Dry the water and check whether it returns. A spill or condensation after a power interruption can look like a leak. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guide and Colombia guide distinguish these possibilities from recurring leaks.
Record where the water appears and whether it began after a power interruption, filter change, water dispensing, or other event. The checks below follow those clues.
Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor
Rule out a spill, condensation, and an unstable position
Clean up the water completely, then watch for it to return. If it does, check that the refrigerator is stable and level according to its model manual. Samsung says its refrigerators are designed to tilt slightly backward, which helps the doors close and supports drainage. The correct adjustment varies by model; do not tip a loaded appliance to test it. Samsung’s India guidance also recommends stable placement and checking the level.
Consider a blocked or frozen defrost drain
During automatic defrost, water normally drains into a tray at the rear or bottom of the refrigerator. A blocked or frozen drain can instead cause water to pool inside. Instructions differ by model and market: Samsung UK says a blocked or frozen drain may need engineer inspection and does not recommend self-repair, while Samsung India describes a basic procedure for its regional products: unplug the refrigerator, locate the interior drain opening, flush it with lukewarm water, clear visible residue, and reconnect power. Check the rear-bottom drain tray only as directed
If water appears to come from the rear-bottom tray, Samsung UK advises checking whether it is full and turning the refrigerator off before cleaning it. An empty tray that continues to leak may be damaged and need replacement or service. The UK page also notes that humidity and low ambient temperature can affect evaporation; consult your local model manual for applicable advice.
Water around the filter
A filter leak calls for a water shutoff and inspection. Filter location varies: it may be behind the refrigerator, between the crisper drawers, or inside the upper compartment. Check the manual for your model’s filter location and removal procedure.

- Shut off the water supply if your manual allows, then inspect the filter for cracks or damage.
- Check that it is seated correctly and locked in place. If your model has accessible O-rings, look for wear or damage that could prevent a seal.
- If replacement is needed, use a filter compatible with the exact refrigerator model. A filter that does not match can fail to seal. Samsung’s US filter guidance recommends genuine replacement filters; its Australian guidance explains that filter position and details vary by model.
A damaged filter housing or a leak that continues after the filter is correctly installed or replaced needs Samsung service. Do not assume a new filter will solve water coming from the drain or another part of the refrigerator.
The water dispenser drips
Wait briefly after dispensing
A few drops immediately after dispensing can be normal. Samsung Colombia advises holding a glass beneath the nozzle for about 3–5 seconds after use. If dripping continues, especially when nobody is using the dispenser, investigate further rather than treating it as a normal after-drip.

Clear trapped air after installation or a filter change
If the dripping began after installation or filter replacement, air in the water line may be the cause. Samsung’s US guidance recommends dispensing water into a large pitcher until the flow settles; repeat if the stream sputters. Follow the procedure for your refrigerator model.
Check the line connection, water flow, and ice chute
If the refrigerator doors were removed or reinstalled, a water-line coupler may need attention. Inspect it only as described in the model manual. Samsung also identifies ice buildup or an imperfect ice-chute seal as possible causes of dispenser dripping.

Samsung US provides a flow check of 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in less than 10 seconds and states a water-pressure range of 30–130 psi. These are Samsung US troubleshooting figures, not universal plumbing specifications. Its guidance recommends contacting a plumber about suspected excessive pressure and having low pressure or system issues checked. - Remove the pitcher and dry it and its compartment.
- Drain water from the compartment, then check the pitcher and lid for cracks.
- Reassemble the lid correctly, dry the parts, and check that the spring button is not stuck.
- Replace a damaged pitcher or cover with a compatible part.
Samsung’s Colombia guidance describes this feature-specific procedure.
When to stop troubleshooting
Arrange Samsung service if the source is inaccessible, the leak continues after the relevant basic checks, or you find a damaged filter housing or drain tray. Do not open internal parts or attempt a drain repair when your model’s guidance directs you to an engineer. If water is near electrical parts, stop and request service rather than continuing to use or inspect the refrigerator.
