A spud gun—also called a potato cannon or potato launcher—is a pipe-based device that propels a projectile, commonly a potato. Common designs use either combusted gas or compressed air. Both can cause serious injury or damage, and whether a device is lawful depends on its design, use, and location.
What is a spud gun?
PVC Ballistics describes a spud gun, sometimes called a spudzooka, as a pipe-based launcher that sends a projectile using combusted gas or compressed air. The projectile is commonly a potato. This is a hobbyist description, not a safety certification. PVC Ballistics’ Spudgun FAQ
What are the two common types?
| Type | Energy source | Hazards identified in the FAQ |
|---|---|---|
| Combustion | Combusted gas | Fire or explosion |
| Pneumatic | Compressed air | Pressure-related rupture or valve failure |
These are high-level distinctions only; the available sources do not establish that one type is safer or performs better than the other. PVC Ballistics’ Spudgun FAQ
Are spud guns dangerous?
Yes. Combustion designs can involve fire or explosion hazards; pneumatic designs can fail through rupture or valve failure. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives warns: “Further, any person intending to make, use, or transfer any such device must be aware that they have a potential for causing serious injury or damage.” ATF, Firearms FAQs, General Questions

These sources do not provide engineering guidance for safe construction or operation. They do not establish safe materials, pressure limits, or operating procedures, so they should not be treated as a basis for building or using a launcher.
Are spud guns legal?
There is no reliable nationwide yes-or-no answer. ATF’s published FAQ says potato-projectile devices used solely for recreation have generally been treated as outside federal firearm and destructive-device definitions. That is general background, not a current device-specific ruling: classification may change with a device’s design or construction, its ammunition, or its actual or intended use. ATF gives flaming tennis balls as an example of a materially different use. Its FAQ also notes that state laws and local ordinances may restrict possession or use. State and local rules can apply independently of federal classification. For example, a March 2026 Michigan State Police legal update discusses Michigan’s statutory definition of a pneumatic gun and legal consequences for certain conduct. The update is about Michigan law and pneumatic guns generally, not a ruling that classifies every spud gun; the agency says it cannot determine a particular device’s legality without the facts and circumstances. Michigan State Police, Legal Update No. 167 (March 2026)
Before possessing or using one, check current rules for your state and locality and consider the device’s design and intended use. Do not rely on a general federal FAQ or another state’s guidance as a legal determination for your circumstances.
