Model and simulate the parts, cut a test joint, dry-fit the first assembly, and only then repeat the job. This workflow helps prevent tight or loose dados, misaligned holes, and assembly errors.
How do I make panel joinery on a CNC router?
Work from the cabinet or furniture assembly backward: decide what each panel must connect to, how the joint will be secured, which faces will show, and in what order the parts will go together. Then model the joint around the material actually on hand, program and simulate the operations, prepare the stock and machine, and test the first parts before batching the cut.
- Define the joint and assembly. Identify the panel’s role, material, measured thickness, expected use, visible faces, hardware interfaces, and assembly order.
- Model and nest the parts. Create the panels and joint geometry in CAD/CAM, then arrange them on sheet stock.
- Generate and simulate toolpaths. Assign operations and tools, verify the paths, and export code using a postprocessor appropriate to the target machine.
- Prepare the machine and stock. Check material dimensions, hold-down, spoilboard, tool assignment and condition, and the X/Y and Z references.
- Cut, identify, and test. Use a planned operation sequence, label parts as they are released, and dry-fit the first assembly before repeating the design.
These steps describe a general workflow, not a substitute for the router’s operating manual or site-specific safety procedures.
Choose the joint before programming
A joint is not just a shape in a panel. Its geometry must suit the material, assembly access, hardware, and intended use. The cabinetmaking guidance describes dados or rabbets with glue, confirmat screws, and pocket screws for suitable applications; it does not provide comparable load ratings, so these methods should not be treated as interchangeable strength options.

| Approach | Where it may fit | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Dado or rabbet with glue | Panel-to-panel connections such as a cabinet side and shelf. | Actual panel thickness, groove width and depth, cutter compensation, glue-up and assembly order. |
| Confirmat screw | Fastener-based cabinet construction where the joint and screw layout are designed for it. | Hole locations, edge distances, drilling operation, orientation, and access during assembly. |
| Pocket screw | Suitable rail or stretcher connections where the screw can be placed and driven as intended. | Fastener position, access, visible faces, and the required assembly sequence. |
| Loose tenon | Applicable edge-to-face joints where a separate tenon aligns the parts. | Tenon size, mortise dimensions, material thickness, and the system used to make the mortises. |
Festool’s illustrated DOMINO example shows the importance of treating dimensions as a system: for its 19 mm material example and a 6 × 40 mm tenon, it routes a 25 mm-deep hole in the edge and a 15 mm-deep hole in the face, then glues the joint. That is a reference for layout and fitting, not a CNC method or a universal specification. See Festool’s panel-joining example.
Measure stock and account for the cutter
Nominal sheet thickness is not a reliable substitute for measuring the material that will be cut. A dado that is too tight or too loose may result from the stock’s actual thickness, tool compensation in CAM, or cutter wear. Check those variables before changing the modeled joint.
- Measure representative panels, especially if sheets come from different batches or suppliers.
- Confirm that the CAM tool diameter and compensation match the cutter currently installed.
- Inspect cutter sharpness and wear; a worn or incorrectly represented diameter can change the fit.
- Cut and test a small sample joint in the same material before committing a full sheet or production run.
Choose cutter geometry and cutting strategy for the material, operation, and required surface quality. The cabinetmaking guidance discusses sharp cutters and compression or downcut strategies, but it does not establish one universal bit diameter or feed-and-speed setting. Read the CNC cabinetmaking guidance.

Model, nest, simulate, and export
CAD/CAM connects the design to the cut: model the parts and joints, nest them on sheet stock, generate toolpaths, simulate those paths, and export machine code for the target router. Autodesk describes these capabilities in its Fusion cabinet-design workflow, including parametric modeling, nesting, toolpaths, simulation, and CNC export. That vendor description does not establish that Fusion is best for every shop or compatible with every controller. Confirm postprocessor and controller compatibility for the specific machine. Autodesk Fusion for cabinet making.
Before exporting, verify that each operation uses the intended tool and that the modeled joint dimensions correspond to the measured stock and chosen cutter. Simulation can help review the programmed sequence, but it does not replace checking the physical setup or following the machine manual.
Prepare the router and keep parts registered
Before cutting, verify the stock dimensions, spoilboard condition, hold-down method, tool assignment and sharpness, X/Y datum, and Z zero. Use the machine-specific setup and zeroing procedures in the operating manual. Depending on the hold-down approach, tabs or an onion-skin may be needed to retain parts during profiling.

A consistent X/Y datum and clear part orientation matter through both cutting and assembly. Mark or label parts as they are released from the sheet, and keep labels legible and tied to the intended orientation. This reduces the chance of fitting a correctly cut part in the wrong position or direction.
Use a deliberate cutting sequence
For the cabinet workflow described in the cited guidance, the suggested order is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Drill holes.
- Cut pockets and dados.
- Cut part profiles last, using tabs or an onion-skin if the chosen hold-down requires them.
Keeping profiles until the end leaves parts retained in the sheet while earlier operations are completed in this workflow. The right sequence still depends on the machine, toolpath plan, and hold-down, so verify it against the setup rather than applying it blindly.

Test fit and troubleshoot before batch cutting
Dry-fit the first cabinet box of each type and check that it assembles square before repeating the same design. A test assembly can expose a systematic fit or registration problem while corrections are still limited to a small number of parts.
If a dado is too tight or loose
- Recheck actual panel thickness.
- Confirm the tool diameter and CAM compensation.
- Inspect the cutter for wear or damage.
- Make a revised sample cut and fit it before changing the production geometry.
If holes do not align
- Check that the same X/Y datum was used where required.
- Confirm part orientation against the model and labels.
- Check machine homing repeatability and the setup procedure.
If assembly is difficult despite a good test cut
Review the planned assembly order, hardware setup, and edge banding. Each can affect access and finished fit; a joint that fits as a bare, dry-cut part may be harder to assemble once the specified finishing and hardware are included.
Match equipment and software to the work
For occasional or general joinery, the essential workflow is an appropriate router, suitable tooling, and CAD/CAM that can produce verified toolpaths for the controller. Higher-production cabinetry may benefit from configurations that combine more tool positions with drilling capacity, but machine specifications alone do not prove production speed or quality.

Follow machine-specific safety guidance
CNC routers involve machine-specific hazards and controls. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s 2014 publication, Routers and machining centres: Safe working practices (WIS22(rev1)), provides practical guidance for employers and operators using CNC routers and machining centres, as well as certain routing machines. Read the full guidance, the current operating manual for the machine, and the rules that apply in your jurisdiction; a summary of its scope is not a substitute for those instructions. Read the HSE WIS22 publication page. Festool likewise cautions that its illustrated panel-joining guide does not replace operating manuals or safety instructions.
