The modern alternative to toilet paper is a bidet: a toilet attachment, bidet seat, smart toilet, or handheld sprayer that rinses with water. It can reduce paper use, but it does not automatically eliminate toilet paper, guarantee better hygiene, or prove a smaller environmental footprint. The right choice depends on your bathroom, cleaning habits, local water conditions, and how you use the fixture.
What replaces toilet paper—and what does not?
A bidet cleans with a directed stream of water. The simplest entry point is often a non-electric attachment installed beneath an existing toilet seat; other options include an electric bidet seat, a smart toilet with bidet functions, or a handheld sprayer. Some people use a small amount of toilet paper or a dedicated towel to dry afterward, so “say goodbye to toilet paper” is better understood as reducing paper use than as a guarantee of going paper-free.
Toilet paper remains a reasonable choice, too. Recycled-content paper may suit renters or households that do not want to modify plumbing, and paper’s environmental impact varies with its materials and manufacturing location. A bidet and toilet paper can also be used together.
Bidet vs. toilet paper: which format fits your bathroom?
Before choosing, check your toilet and the installation requirements for the specific product. Compatibility, plumbing connections, electrical needs, cleaning access, controls, and how you plan to dry are more useful decision points than an unsupported “best bidet” ranking.

For construction or remodeling, consider the water connection and any electrical work before walls or finishes are closed. For an existing bathroom, verify the product’s fit and installation instructions rather than assuming every toilet or plumbing arrangement is compatible.
Is a bidet cleaner?
There is limited evidence that rinsing can reduce contamination on hands, but it does not establish that bidets prevent infections or are universally cleaner. A 2021 study by Oie and Kawai involving 32 nursing students reported mean glove counts of 39,499.3 colony-forming units (CFU) without bidet use and 4,146.9 CFU with bidet use. The authors noted the small sample and semi-controlled conditions, so the result should not be treated as a population-wide clinical outcome.

Cleaning the fixture matters as well. In a 2017 study at a university-affiliated hospital in Japan, Kanayama-Katsuse and colleagues found one or more organisms on 254 of 292 sampled warm-water nozzles (86.9%). That hospital result is not an estimate of household nozzle contamination; the authors called for monitoring and disinfection in hospital risk management. Follow the product’s cleaning guidance and keep nozzle access in mind when assessing a design.
Medical professionals sometimes recommend bidets for people with hemorrhoids, during post-surgical recovery, or for people with limited mobility, but a bidet is not right for everyone. Use gentle pressure and clean the device appropriately. Persistent symptoms warrant advice from a clinician rather than relying on a consumer fixture as treatment.

Is a bidet more eco-friendly?
Not in every bathroom or under every set of assumptions. A fair comparison considers the paper’s materials and manufacturing, water use and local water availability, electricity for heated water or seats, and actual user behavior. As Gary Bull, professor emeritus of forestry at the University of British Columbia, told the Associated Press, an honest cradle-to-cradle comparison must account for water and energy as well as tissue.
A 2011 University of Michigan student life-cycle assessment reported modeled average impacts 16 times lower for global warming potential and 13 times lower for cumulative energy demand for a water health faucet than for its modeled toilet-paper use. The scenario used tap water, included heating it to 80°F with a natural-gas domestic hot-water system, and modeled annual per-person use in the United States. The report was prepared for an advanced life-cycle-assessment class and said critical review was optional; it is one older modeled scenario, not a universal comparison of today’s products.

Local conditions can change the answer. Andrea Hicks, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Wisconsin, told the Associated Press that toilet paper may be the more sustainable choice in a water-stressed state such as Arizona, while a bidet may make more sense where water is abundant. Heated features also use electricity, so a product’s existence alone does not establish a net environmental benefit.
For whole-bathroom water context, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says WaterSense-labeled toilets use 20–60% less water than standard toilets and can save nearly 13,000 gallons per home per year. Those figures concern replacing a toilet with a WaterSense-labeled model, not water savings from installing a bidet.

Installation and use checklist
- Confirm the toilet’s shape and dimensions against the product’s compatibility information.
- Identify the required water connection and whether the installation suits the existing plumbing.
- For electric seats or smart toilets, check outlet availability and the product’s power requirements.
- Review installation instructions and consider access for maintenance before choosing a permanent fixture.
- Check how the nozzle, sprayer, or surrounding parts are cleaned.
- Decide how you will dry after rinsing; some users continue to use a little toilet paper.
- For a remodel, coordinate plumbing and electrical needs with the bathroom layout and construction schedule.
What should still go in the toilet?
In the United States, the EPA’s rule of thumb is to flush only human waste and toilet paper. Do not use “flushable” wipes as a substitute for toilet paper: wipes can damage household plumbing and sewer or septic systems. Follow the disposal guidance for your local system and place wipes in the trash, not the toilet.
