No particular plant is established by the extension sources reviewed as a reliable way to repel snakes. Instead of planting lemongrass, marigolds, garlic, or another supposed deterrent, focus on reducing hiding places and food opportunities around the areas you use. These steps can make a yard less inviting, but they cannot guarantee that snakes will never pass through.
Do any plants reliably repel snakes?
The sources reviewed do not support planting any species as a proven snake repellent. In a University of Wyoming Extension response to a Laramie County resident, an expert put it plainly: “I have never heard of a plant that would deter snakes.” The response, “Keeping Snakes Out of the Yard,” dated April 21, 2014, does not establish a plant-based alternative.
That means lists of supposedly snake-repelling plants should not be treated as practical guarantees. If snakes are appearing in a yard, consider what the site offers: cover, prey, water, and routes into sheltered places. The best-supported steps in the extension guidance target those conditions rather than relying on a plant’s smell or other presumed repellent property.
How to make the yard less attractive to snakes
Reduce cover near buildings and well-used areas
Keep grass and rough vegetation trimmed around the house and places people regularly use. Prune low vegetation and dense shrubs where practical, and avoid creating an unbroken strip of cover beside a foundation, path, or play area. Recommendations to clear brush and keep vegetation managed appear in guidance from Oregon State University Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Move piles and stored materials
Brush piles, stacked lumber, sheets of metal, rocks, and other stored debris can provide sheltered places for wildlife. Remove them where possible or store materials away from the house and frequently used areas. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension quotes wildlife specialist Maureen Frank advising people to “take the habitat approach and remove the things that attract snakes” in “Snakes are out,” published in 2020.
Limit food and shelter for prey where relevant
Where rodents are a concern, reduce the food and shelter opportunities around buildings that support them. This may help with snakes that prey on rodents, but diets differ among snake species; a sighting does not prove that rodents are the cause. Oregon State and Texas A&M include prey or food sources among the factors to consider when assessing a property.

What if a snake is getting beneath a shed?
An open yard and a defined gap beneath a structure call for different approaches. Habitat cleanup reduces available cover across an area; exclusion mesh targets a specific access point. In a response concerning Multnomah County, Oregon State University Extension describes fitting woven 1/4-inch wire mesh along the bottom of a shed and trenching it to improve exclusion. The advice also concerns digging animals, so it is not a universal installation specification for every building. Consult local guidance and choose a detail appropriate to the structure and site.
| Situation | Measure described in the extension guidance | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Cover across a yard or near high-use areas | Trim grass and vegetation; remove or relocate brush, lumber, and debris | Habitat and hiding places |
| Gap beneath a shed | Woven 1/4-inch wire mesh fitted along the bottom and trenched to improve exclusion | A defined route beneath a structure |
Neither approach ensures that a yard will be snake-free. Oregon State Extension notes that snakes can continue to occur when suitable habitat remains in the surrounding landscape.

Should you use mothballs, sulfur, or sonic devices?
Do not rely on these as a safe, proven fix. University of Georgia Extension says naphthalene is toxic to people and pets and reports that sulfur and sonic devices do not consistently repel snakes. Its advice is available at “Snakes: Information for Georgia Homeowners”. Virginia Tech likewise summarizes research that failed to demonstrate success for sulfur and naphthalene products. Follow product labels, and do not use mothballs outdoors as a snake deterrent.

If a snake is inside a building, may be venomous, or cannot be identified confidently, do not approach or handle it based on generic online instructions. Contact local wildlife authorities or a qualified local professional for advice suited to your area. Identification, legal protections, and appropriate responses vary by location; Virginia-specific legal guidance, for example, should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
