The right elevation depends on the bottom of the picture, the distance between the screen and each seating row, the seated eye positions, and what the front row obstructs. Calculate sightlines for your actual layout rather than relying on a generic 8-, 12-, or 14-inch recommendation.
What determines the riser height?
The key test is whether viewers in each row can see the bottom of the picture over the seats or heads in front of them. A side-view drawing makes this geometry visible: mark the bottom edge of the picture, each viewer’s eye point, and the obstruction in front, then check the line from the rear eye point toward the picture’s lower edge.
The UNIC cinema-design handbook describes sightline clearance using the row number, distance from the screen to each row, the difference between eye level and picture-bottom level, and the clearance over the obstruction. Its method supports calculating row elevations individually; it is not a universal one-row formula that can be reduced to one standard riser height. Measure your room and seats
- Mark the picture. Measure the height of the bottom of the visible image from the room floor. Use the image, not just the screen frame.
- Position the actual seats. Place them where they are intended to go and measure seated eye height in the posture viewers will use. For recliners, measure in the expected reclined position; an upright eye measurement may not represent the viewing layout.
- Record row distances. Measure horizontally from the picture reference to each row’s eye position, and record the spacing between rows.
- Identify the obstruction and margin. In side elevation, check the line from each rear eye point toward the bottom of the picture against the seat or head in front. Decide what clearance you want rather than assuming a generic margin.
- Calculate each row’s elevation. Apply the handbook’s row-by-row sightline method, preserving its definitions and diagram. For multiple rows, account for the cumulative floor profile; do not multiply a one-row estimate by the number of rows.
- Recheck the full layout. If the resulting rear elevation is impractical, adjust screen-bottom height, first-row distance, row spacing, or row count, then check sightlines again.
Why each row may need a different rise
Repeating the same riser height can reduce sightline clearance in rows farther from the screen. The handbook identifies individually calculated riser heights as the ideal way to provide equal clearance across rows; it also notes that a design can use groups of lower and higher risers. Its stated ideal is: “The ideal solution is to design individual riser heights for each row, calculated to give equal sightline clearance for every row.”

Ways to reduce an impractical platform height
- Raise the bottom of the picture: This can improve the line of sight, but check whether the new screen position remains comfortable for the front row.
- Move the first row farther from the screen: Recalculate all affected sightlines after moving seats.
- Change row spacing: Spacing affects the geometry, so evaluate the whole side view rather than changing one distance in isolation.
- Reduce the number of rows: Fewer rows may avoid the need for a tall platform at the rear.
Compare the alternatives by sightline clearance for every seat, total rear-row elevation, screen position, and whether the room retains usable headroom and access. Headroom and access are essential room-fit checks, but the cited sightline method does not set their dimensions.

A sightline calculation determines viewing geometry; it does not establish that a platform is structurally adequate or compliant with local building, permit, or accessibility requirements. Check ceiling clearance, safe access, structural design, and the rules that apply where the home is located before construction. The U.S. Access Board’s Chapter 8 — ADA-IBC Comparison discusses spectator lines of sight for wheelchair spaces and includes a calculation involving tread depth and riser heights. It is a U.S. accessibility comparison, not a determination of the requirements for every private residence or jurisdiction.
