The best no-hole option depends on two things: whether your wall surface is compatible with the hanger and whether the frame is within its stated weight limit. For a light frame on a smooth, suitable surface, removable picture hanging strips are a practical choice. For heavier or fragile pictures, do not assume adhesive strips are safe; check the exact product’s guidance before hanging.
Choose a method that suits the wall and the frame
Before choosing a hanger, identify the wall finish and weigh the complete framed picture. The surface determines whether an adhesive product is appropriate; the frame’s weight and dimensions determine whether it is within that product’s capacity. A method that avoids a nail hole can still be unsuitable if either condition is outside the product instructions.
Removable picture hanging strips
These strips attach the frame to the wall with paired adhesive pieces and are designed to be removed by stretching a tab. They are the clearest no-hole option supported here, but their compatibility and capacity are specific to each product. For example, the US Command 5 lb Small Picture Hanging Strips page lists painted walls, metal, painted concrete, laminate and finished wood, tile, glass, and other smooth surfaces. It excludes wallpaper, fabric, textured walls, brick, and rough surfaces.
That same US listing says four pairs of the cited small strips hold frames up to 5 pounds and up to 18 × 24 inches. Treat those as limits for that specific product, not as a general rating for adhesive hangers or other strip sizes. Check the package and product page for the exact strips you have.

Leaning a frame instead of attaching it
If a picture can sit securely on a shelf or other stable furniture, leaning it avoids wall fasteners altogether. This is a general alternative rather than a tested recommendation for every frame or room: consider whether the frame can slide or tip, and keep it away from edges where it could fall. A picture ledge can provide a dedicated resting place, but installing one usually requires fasteners and therefore makes holes.
How to use removable strips carefully
- Check the wall finish. Confirm that your surface appears in the instructions for the exact product. Do not use the cited small Command strips on wallpaper, fabric, textured walls, brick, or rough surfaces.
- Check the complete frame. Use the product’s weight and size limits, including the number of strip pairs required. If the frame is heavy, valuable, or fragile and the manufacturer’s guidance does not establish suitability, choose another secure arrangement rather than guessing.
- Prepare and attach as directed. Follow the package instructions for surface preparation, placement, and pressing. As a market-specific example, 3M’s UK & Ireland guide says to press firmly for 30 seconds and wait one hour before adding weight. Do not assume those timings apply to products sold elsewhere; follow the directions supplied with your strips.
- Remove slowly when needed. Follow the product’s removal directions, pulling or stretching the tab slowly toward the floor. The manufacturer describes the strips as designed for clean removal when correctly used on suitable surfaces, but that is not a guarantee that every painted or aging wall will remain untouched.
When adhesive strips are not the right choice
Skip adhesive strips when the wall surface is excluded by the product instructions, when the frame exceeds its stated capacity, or when you cannot confirm that the specific product is suitable for a heavy, valuable, or fragile picture. If the picture cannot safely rest on furniture, use a properly rated fastening method suited to the wall, even if that means accepting a small hole. A secure installation matters more than avoiding every mark.
