If the router needs a stand or bracket to sit securely, use one the manufacturer approves or a compatible accessory.
Choose a tabletop method
“Table-mounting” can mean setting the router directly on its feet, using a supplied desk stand, or placing it on a separate shelf or tabletop stand. Start with the simplest option that keeps the router stable and leaves its ventilation and connections accessible. Do not assume a router has a universal bracket or that it should be drilled or stuck to the furniture.
- Direct placement: Use a firm, level table or shelf if the router’s instructions allow it.
- Supplied stand: Assemble and orient it as directed for the model; do not remove or repurpose a stand unless the manual explains how.
- Separate shelf or stand: Check that it supports the router’s footprint without blocking vents, ports, or cables.
Pick a location that supports airflow and Wi-Fi coverage
Place the router in an open, central area of the home at a moderate height where practical. Avoid enclosing it in a cabinet or placing it beside heat sources, direct sunlight, high-powered appliances, or objects that can obstruct the signal. Walls and other objects reduce signal strength, so an unobstructed position can help coverage; it does not guarantee a particular speed increase. TP-Link recommends central, elevated, open placement, and NETGEAR likewise advises central placement with a clear line of sight (TP-Link placement guidance; NETGEAR placement guidance).
Keep every intake and exhaust vent uncovered. Cisco’s hardware guide for its 850/870 router series says not to cover or obstruct the side vents; that instruction illustrates the principle but is specific to those legacy models (Cisco 850/870 installation guide). Clearance requirements vary: Cisco specifies at least 3 inches (7.62 cm) at the inlet and exhaust vents for its ASR 1001-HX and ASR 1002-HX enterprise routers, not as a general consumer-router rule (Cisco ASR 1001-HX/1002-HX installation guide). Check your router’s manual for its own ventilation spacing.

Set the router’s orientation and antennas
Keep the router in the orientation its manufacturer specifies. If it has adjustable antennas, use the model’s instructions and aim them to serve the areas where you need coverage. A router designed to stand upright may not be intended to lie flat, and changing orientation can affect ventilation as well as antenna position.
Check compatibility before adding a mount
Before buying a Wi-Fi router shelf or tabletop stand, compare its support and dimensions with the router itself. Make sure the setup leaves ventilation openings clear and allows access to ports, reset controls, power, and network cables. Also check the manufacturer’s mounting instructions: a wall-mount method does not automatically make the same adhesive or hardware suitable for a table.

Mounting features are model-specific. ASUS says the detachable foot stand on the PRT-BE5000 and RT-AX59U can serve as a mounting bracket and documents desk- and wall-mount methods; its guide cautions against ceiling installation and mounting above 2 meters. Those limits apply to those named models, not to routers generally (ASUS mounting guide, updated June 15, 2026). TP-Link’s Archer Air R5 instructions, by contrast, describe adhesive or bracket mounting for that device and warn about heat dissipation and possible surface damage. That is not a recommendation to attach an unspecified router to a table (TP-Link Archer Air R5 mounting guide).
