Check the backing and protect the table finish
The underside matters as much as the surface. Weekend Kitchen recommends cork or rubberized backing for grip and table protection. That is useful guidance, but a backing does not guarantee compatibility with every finish. Erika A. That range describes the products in that publisher’s comparison; it is not a standard for all placemats or a promise that a mat will protect every tabletop from hot cookware. Check the exact product’s stated limit and intended use, and use a trivet when the cookware or manufacturer’s guidance calls for one.

Weekend Kitchen’s May 8, 2026 roundup says it reviewed seven sets. Its named examples include the following, but the article does not establish that their specifications, prices or availability remain current:
