Dry mode is an air conditioner’s dehumidification setting: it removes moisture from indoor air by cooling it at the heat exchanger until water condenses and drains away. Because that process involves cooling, the air may still feel cool. Use Dry when the room feels damp or sticky and its temperature is tolerable; use Cool when lowering the room temperature is the priority.
How AC Dry mode works
The indoor unit draws in warm, moist air and moves it across a cold heat exchanger. Water vapor condenses on the coil into liquid, which drains through the unit’s condensate line. The air returns to the room with less moisture. Daikin explains this condensation process in its guide to cooling and Dry mode, and LG describes condensate drainage in its dehumidification troubleshooting guidance.
Dry is not a way to dehumidify without cooling. The coil must be cold enough for moisture to condense, so some cooling is part of the process. A unit may manage temperature, fan speed, and compressor operation differently in Dry than in Cool. For example, Daikin’s cited manual says its Dry operation automatically controls airflow and mixes dehumidified cool air with room air; that behavior is specific to the models covered by that manual, not a rule for every AC.
Dry mode vs. Cool mode: which should you choose?

This is a choice of goal, not a universal ranking of performance. Outdoor conditions and the AC’s controls affect what a particular unit can do. Daikin summarizes the distinction in its mode explanation.

Some cool airflow is expected because moisture removal requires the indoor coil to cool the air. LG says its dehumidification mode provides low-level cooling while the outdoor unit operates; see its explanation of cold air in dehumidification mode. How noticeable that cooling is depends on the unit and its operating conditions.

Does Dry mode use less electricity?
There is no reliable, universal answer that Dry mode always uses less electricity than Cool. Manufacturers describe different control strategies, but the cited sources do not provide a general, independently comparable energy figure across models, homes, and weather conditions. Choose a mode for the room’s actual need rather than assuming Dry is an energy-saving setting.
Samsung Global Newsroom reports that a Samsung Electronics Digital Appliances study from 2015 found Dry mode removed approximately 2.7 times as much moisture as Cool mode at the same temperature in a simulated high-humidity environment. The reported test also showed relative humidity falling from 75% to 55%. This is a company-reported result for that test, not a prediction for every AC or room. The details appear in Samsung’s interview with its air-conditioning engineers.

How to select Dry mode
- Turn on the AC.
- Press the remote’s Mode button and select Dry, if that option is available. Samsung India gives this as an example in its Dry mode instructions.
- Let the unit run and observe whether the room feels more comfortable. Temperature adjustment, fan control, icons, and the exact button sequence vary by model; follow the owner’s manual if your remote or unit behaves differently.
If the room stays humid or conditions are cool
Humidity does not seem to fall
Moisture removal depends on the compressor operating and water condensing on the coil. LG notes that dehumidification can become less effective when the compressor slows or stops, and that moisture on the heat exchanger can evaporate during fan-only periods. Check the instructions for your model and LG’s troubleshooting guidance before concluding that the unit has a fault.
Outdoor conditions are cool
Some units may be less effective at dehumidifying in cool conditions. Daikin’s cited manual says its Dry mode is less effective when outdoor temperature is lower than indoor temperature. LG also notes that under some low indoor-temperature conditions, the outdoor unit may not operate for dehumidification. These are model-specific operating notes, not universal limits; see the Daikin manual and LG support guidance.

Controls do not match these steps
Dry mode can use automatic airflow or other controls that differ from Cool mode. Consult the manual for your make and model for available adjustments and operating limits. Daikin’s Cool, Dry, and Fan operation manual illustrates why one manufacturer’s settings should not be assumed to apply to another.
