In the United States, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires Section 608 certification to recharge appliances. Have a qualified technician diagnose and repair the cause of refrigerant loss, then follow the manufacturer’s model-specific service and restart instructions.
Can you recharge a dehumidifier yourself?
Not in the United States. EPA states, “Section 608 Certification is required to recharge appliances.” The agency also requires certification for people performing maintenance, service, or repair that could reasonably be expected to compromise a refrigerant circuit and release refrigerant. Adding or removing refrigerant, and connecting or disconnecting hoses and gauges, are examples of work that can cross that line. EPA defines a dehumidifier as a small appliance under Section 608 only when it is factory-manufactured, hermetically sealed, and contains five pounds or less of refrigerant. Check the unit’s rating plate and documentation rather than assuming every configuration meets that definition. Certification rules apply to refrigerant-circuit work; they do not mean that every routine inspection or external cleaning task requires certification.
Why a dehumidifier should not simply be topped off
Refrigerant is not a routine consumable. If the charge is low, the important question is why it was lost. EPA’s homeowner guidance for air-conditioning systems advises asking a service technician to locate and repair leaks rather than topping off a leaking system. Although that guidance is general rather than specific to a particular dehumidifier, the same caution is appropriate here: a top-off without diagnosing the cause does not establish that the underlying problem has been fixed.

Reduced moisture removal by itself does not prove that refrigerant is low. Ask a qualified service provider to diagnose the unit rather than inferring a refrigerant problem from that symptom alone.
What to do before returning the unit to service
- Identify the appliance. Find the make and model on the rating plate and consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer support for the correct service and restart guidance.
- Arrange qualified diagnosis. Tell the technician that refrigerant may have been lost and ask what caused the loss and whether a leak was found.
- Ask about the repair and charge. Confirm whether the leak was repaired, which refrigerant the model requires, and the amount specified for this unit. Do not use a generic charge amount or pressure target; none can be established without model-specific service information.
- Confirm the post-service check. Ask what operating check was completed after the repair and what the technician recommends before normal use.
- Follow model-specific restart instructions. Return the unit to service only in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance and the technician’s instructions.
Keep recovery, evacuation, brazing, refrigerant charging, gauge connection, and refrigerant-quantity procedures to qualified service personnel. EPA’s stationary refrigeration service practice requirements describe applicable service practices. EPA also prohibits intentional venting of ozone-depleting refrigerants and their substitutes during service, repair, or disposal, subject to stated exceptions; see its prohibition on venting refrigerants.

Repair or replace?
The right choice depends on the confirmed fault and the condition of this particular unit; there is no supported universal age or repair-cost cutoff. Compare the technician’s diagnosis and repair quote with parts availability, the appliance’s overall condition, the capacity a replacement would need to provide, and your expected operating needs. Without a model, diagnosis, and quote, a blanket recommendation would be unreliable.
